Never Let Go (2024) is a psychological survival-horror film directed by Alexandre Aja and starring Halle Berry as a mother who raises her twin sons in isolation. The family believes an evil force waits beyond their remote woodland home—and that their ropes, rituals, and absolute rule to “never let go” are the only things keeping them alive.
When one son begins to question whether the threat is real, the family’s entire belief system starts to fracture. The result is less a conventional post-apocalyptic action film than a claustrophobic story about fear, parental control, inherited trauma, and the unstable boundary between supernatural horror and psychological distress.

What is Never Let Go about?
A mother and her twin sons live in a remote house surrounded by dense woodland. They believe an evil presence exists outside the property. The family’s protection depends on staying physically connected to the house by ropes: when they leave, they remain tethered, and they must never let go.
#1 Best Overall
- The Help (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy)
The mother treats these rules as matters of life and death. The boys have grown up inside this system, learning that the outside world is dangerous and that obedience is inseparable from survival. But the twins do not respond to their circumstances in exactly the same way. As Nolan becomes increasingly skeptical, Samuel remains more closely aligned with the family’s established beliefs. Their differing reactions turn the supernatural premise into a deeply personal conflict.
That is the film’s central question, and it is best approached without an immediate answer: is there truly an evil force beyond the house, or has isolation and fear created a reality the family can no longer examine clearly?
This is a spoiler-free description. The film’s final explanation and the fate of its characters are deliberately left out here because they are the subjects of the movie’s most contested interpretations.
Is the threat supernatural or psychological?
Never Let Go is designed to keep both possibilities in play. The mother’s experiences and warnings may be understood as evidence of a genuine supernatural danger, but they can also be read through the effects of isolation, trauma, deprivation, and an upbringing built around fear. The film does not make that tension incidental; it is the mechanism that creates suspense.

The danger is not only whatever may be outside the house. It is also the family’s dependence on a shared belief, the consequences of questioning that belief, and the possibility that protection has become coercion.
Viewers should be cautious about describing the mother simply as “crazy.” Halle Berry’s character is more complicated than that label allows. She is a caregiver attempting to protect her children, an authority figure enforcing increasingly severe rules, and a person whose judgment the story asks us to question. The film’s psychological interpretation is an analytical lens—not a definitive diagnosis supplied by the story.

Cast and performances
Halle Berry as the mother
Halle Berry carries most of the film’s emotional and physical burden. She is the only principal adult presence in the isolated family setting, and her performance has to move between tenderness, command, terror, exhaustion, and possible unreliability.
The role works best when those qualities exist at the same time. The mother’s rules are controlling, but they are also rooted in a protective impulse. Her fear can appear irrational from one moment and urgently practical the next. That instability gives Berry the film’s most demanding part and is one reason even mixed reviews have often singled out her commitment and presence.

Percy Daggs IV plays Nolan, the twin whose doubts begin to destabilize the household. Nolan represents the pressure of growing independence: he is no longer willing to accept every rule simply because it has always been presented as necessary.
Anthony B. Jenkins as Samuel
Anthony B. Jenkins plays Samuel, Nolan’s twin brother. Samuel’s closer attachment to the mother’s worldview creates a second source of tension. The conflict is therefore not only between parent and child; it is also between two brothers who have been raised under the same conditions but arrive at different conclusions.
What kind of horror film is it?
The most accurate descriptions are psychological horror, survival horror, and mystery-thriller. It has a remote setting and a sustained threat, but it is not best understood as a conventional post-apocalyptic action movie. Its suspense comes from uncertainty, ritual, family dependency, and the question of whether the characters can trust their own understanding of the world.
Alexandre Aja’s direction emphasizes constrained spaces and escalating pressure. Aja, whose horror and thriller work includes The Hills Have Eyes and Crawl, approaches this story as a test of how long suspense can be maintained when the film does not rely only on graphic spectacle. The result is a film built around atmosphere and unease as much as explicit violence.

The themes beneath the rope
Protection becoming control
The mother’s rules begin as safeguards, but a safeguard can become a method of control when no one is allowed to question it. The film asks when parental protection stops supporting a child and starts preventing the child from developing an independent understanding of danger.
Isolation and inherited trauma
The sons inherit more than a house and a set of survival procedures. They inherit the mother’s fear. Because they have little access to an outside perspective, the family’s explanation of reality becomes difficult to test. That makes isolation a physical condition and an emotional one.
Belief under pressure
The ropes function as both practical objects and symbols. They connect the family to safety, but they also make dependence visible. To let go is not merely to break a rule; it is to challenge the belief that has organized the family’s entire life.
Childhood dependence versus autonomy
Nolan and Samuel are children who must decide how much trust they owe to an adult whose certainty is weakening. Their different responses give the horror a coming-of-age dimension: gaining independence may be necessary, but in this world it may also carry an apparently lethal risk.

Never Let Go received mixed reviews. In the latest Rotten Tomatoes listing used for this article, it stood at 56% from 105 critics and 54% from more than 500 verified audience ratings. Those figures are time-sensitive snapshots, not permanent measures of the film’s quality.
Positive reactions tend to emphasize the anxiety-inducing atmosphere, the visual handling of the isolated setting, and Halle Berry’s performance. The film’s narrow locations and family-centered premise can create an effective feeling of enclosure, particularly for viewers who enjoy horror that builds uncertainty rather than explaining its threat immediately.
Rank #4
Negative reactions commonly focus on the screenplay’s unanswered questions and the risks of its ambiguity. Some viewers find the eventual resolution unsatisfying or feel that the film raises mysteries it does not resolve cleanly. RogerEbert.com similarly praised Aja’s technical control in constrained locations while criticizing the screenplay as muddled.
The practical expectation to set is this: watch it for atmosphere, performances, and an unsettling family premise if you are comfortable with unresolved interpretation. Do not approach it expecting every supernatural rule to receive a neat, universally accepted explanation.

Physical release: Blu-ray, DVD, and digital copy
The strongest physical-media option identified in the research is the Lionsgate Never Let Go Blu-ray + DVD + Digital HD combo release. The physical-media listing gives a December 3, 2024 release date, an approximately 101-minute runtime, an R rating, and Lionsgate Films as distributor. Lionsgate’s official movie page separately confirms Blu-ray and DVD purchase routes through Amazon and Walmart.
This edition is a sensible choice for viewers who want to own the film, watch without depending on a changing streaming license, or use both Blu-ray and DVD formats. The available evidence supports Blu-ray/DVD combo language; it does not support calling this a 4K UHD release. Check the exact retailer listing before buying because edition, stock, price, and included digital entitlements can vary.
Should you watch Never Let Go?
Never Let Go is most likely to work for viewers who enjoy contained horror, unreliable perspectives, family-centered dread, and stories that leave room for argument. Halle Berry’s performance and Alexandre Aja’s control of the setting provide strong reasons to try it.
It is a less certain recommendation for viewers who need tightly answered mythology or a completely unambiguous ending. The same uncertainty that makes the premise intriguing is also the source of the film’s most frequent criticism. Go in expecting a psychological survival-horror film whose central mystery matters as much as its solution—and whose solution may not settle every question for every viewer.

Bottom line: Never Let Go is an atmospheric, mixed-reviewed survival-horror film centered on a mother, her twin sons, and a rope-bound belief that the outside world is deadly.
