Spoilers for all six episodes of Secrets We Keep. Ruby was raped by Oscar, Katarina and Rasmus’s underage son, and Oscar is the father of her baby. Ruby’s body is found drowned, but the finale does not confirm whether she died by suicide or was killed. Katarina’s chilling response to Cecilie strongly suggests she may have killed Ruby to protect Oscar, but it is not a confession or proof.
What happened to Ruby?
Ruby, the Filipino au pair employed by the Hoffmann family, had asked her neighbor Cecilie for help because she could not stay with Katarina’s family. Cecilie did not intervene. Later, the investigation leads to Ruby’s body at a marina, where the coroner determines that she was pregnant and had drowned.
The series reveals that Ruby had been raped. DNA evidence clears Cecilie’s husband, Mike, as the father. Rasmus’s DNA produces a partial match, but the degree of relation rules him out: Ruby’s baby was fathered by Oscar, Rasmus and Katarina’s underage son. The paternity reveal is established; the circumstances of Ruby’s death are not.
Who got Ruby pregnant?
Oscar fathered Ruby’s baby. He treated Ruby as someone he could control and admits what he did. The DNA evidence initially points toward Rasmus as a possible relative, but it does not make him the father. The father is his son Oscar.

Did Katarina kill Ruby?
The finale leaves Ruby’s death unresolved. After Oscar tells Cecilie that he overheard a confrontation between Katarina and Ruby, Cecilie challenges Katarina. Katarina replies, “What if I did?”—the line as reported in TIME’s May 16, 2025 recap. It makes Katarina a compelling suspect, but she does not clearly confess, and the series supplies no proof that she killed Ruby.
The murder interpretation fits Katarina’s apparent willingness to protect her son and the family’s position. But the finale also leaves open the possibility that Ruby died by suicide. Neither explanation is confirmed, so it would be inaccurate to describe Katarina as definitively revealed to be the killer.

Why does Oscar escape meaningful consequences?
The family protects Oscar rather than exposing him to accountability. Katarina disposes of potentially incriminating material, and the investigation does not produce evidence sufficient to secure consequences for him. He is sent away to boarding school. Cecilie, meanwhile, refuses to put her son Viggo in the position of testifying against Oscar.
That outcome leaves the assault exposed to viewers while justice is evaded. The adults’ choices put family reputation and their children’s interests ahead of Ruby, a worker whose pleas and vulnerability are easy for them to dismiss.

Why does the ending matter?
Secrets We Keep is less interested in closing the case than in showing how unequal power shapes what happens to Ruby. Oscar acts as if Ruby cannot refuse him; the adults around him have the means to hide evidence and avoid consequences. Cecilie’s failure to respond when Ruby first asks for help—and her later refusal to involve Viggo—shows that she, too, is constrained by loyalty to her own family.
Creator Ingeborg Topsøe has said she is fascinated by “the power structures within a family.” She also described the tension of au pairs being treated as “part of the family” while they are employed. The series turns that contradiction into a source of vulnerability: apparent closeness does not erase the power imbalance between a household and the worker who depends on it.
