Its story is the harder sell: the small early critical sample praised the visuals but questioned the plot’s development and storytelling. The series premiered on Netflix on April 10, 2025, and Netflix’s listing identifies it as an 18-episode anime.
What is Moonrise about?
Netflix frames Moonrise around a clash between a peaceful Earth and the Moon’s fight for independence. In the series’ premise, Earth relies on Sapientia, an international AI network, while a lunar development project keeps Earth cleaner and more stable by sending criminals and pollutants to the Moon. The unequal arrangement leaves lunar communities in poverty and helps drive rebellion.
Jack Shadow joins Earth’s army after his family is killed in a rebel bombing. Sent to the Moon as a scout, he begins with revenge as his purpose, but the resistance proves more complicated than a simple target. Netflix’s shorter listing describes a carefree heir who becomes a prime suspect after rebels attack Earth and joins a special military unit to find the mastermind on the Moon. The two descriptions establish the political conflict and Jack’s changing mission without resolving the story’s mysteries.
What makes the series look promising?
The creative credits give the space opera recognizable anime credentials. Tou Ubukata is credited with the original work, Hiromu Arakawa designed the original characters, Masashi Koizuka directed, and WIT STUDIO produced the animation. Ayumi Yamada is credited with character design. The announced Japanese cast includes Chiaki Kobayashi as Jack, Yuto Uemura as Phil and AiNA THE END as Mary; AiNA THE END also performs the theme song, “Daijoubu.”

Koizuka described the production as potentially “WIT Studio’s first space opera” in Netflix’s March 7, 2025 announcement. That is the director’s promotional description, not an independent assessment. Kobayashi likewise highlighted the fast-paced action in the announcement, while noting that much of the original anime’s story remained mysterious.
Does the story live up to the visuals?
The available criticism points to the main trade-off. When accessed in 2026, Rotten Tomatoes listed two critic reviews and a 50% Tomatometer score for the season. Danae Stahlnecker of Common Sense Media said the show works as a character drama but has weak plot development. Pramit Chatterjee of Digital Mafia Talkies rated it 2.5/5; the Rotten Tomatoes excerpt from the review praised the visuals but faulted the storytelling for getting in the way of enjoying the animation.

That is a small, divided sample—not a reliable measure of broad critical or audience opinion. Still, the contrast is useful for setting expectations: the series’ scale and visual appeal may be its draw, while its plot’s development is a plausible frustration. The title’s “gorgeous” and “mess” are judgments, not settled consensus.
