It follows her after the miraculous conception of Jesus and dramatizes the danger surrounding his birth, including Herod’s pursuit of the newborn. The film is a cinematic retelling, not a claim that every scene appears in scripture.
What is Mary about?
Netflix describes Mary as a biblical epic centered on Mary’s journey to give birth to Jesus. The story follows her and Joseph as they go into hiding while King Herod seeks the newborn. Netflix’s Tudum describes the pursuit as an action-driven approach to telling the story.
Director D.J. Caruso characterized the film, “From a cinematic perspective,” as “essentially an origin story of Christianity, centered on Mary as the chosen one to deliver the world its greatest gift.” That is Caruso’s framing of the film, which emphasizes Mary as a young woman facing faith, motherhood, and danger.

How does the film relate to the biblical accounts?
The film draws on the Nativity story and dramatizes events associated with Jesus’s conception, birth, Herod, and the family’s flight. Matthew 1:18–2:23 is a useful passage to read alongside those parts of the film: Matthew 1:18–2:23 in the NRSVUE.

A comparison should distinguish what a Gospel explicitly narrates from what a screen adaptation adds, rearranges, or develops for dramatic storytelling. The film’s premise alone does not establish the biblical source or accuracy of each scene, and a scene-by-scene comparison is not available here. Caruso has said he sought to present Mary “in her most human and relatable form”; that is the director’s stated creative aim, not an independent historical assessment.
