Netflix’s current iPhone and iPad app requires iOS 18 or later, so devices still running iOS 16 cannot install or update to the latest version. That does not prove every older Netflix installation has stopped working: some users may be able to keep using an older app or redownload a last-compatible version if they previously acquired Netflix with the same Apple ID. Netflix does not guarantee that older versions will keep working.
What Netflix’s iOS 18 requirement means
Netflix’s iPhone and iPad help page says the latest app requires iOS or iPadOS 18 or later. The U.S. App Store listing gives the same iOS 18.0 minimum. These first-party requirements establish that iOS 16 is below the current app’s minimum; they do not establish a separate shutdown date for every older installation.
- App updates: An iOS 16 device cannot install the current app version.
- First-time installation: If Netflix has never been downloaded with your Apple ID, a new install on iOS 16 generally is not available.
- Redownload: Netflix says people who previously downloaded the app may be able to redownload a compatible version on older systems. This is conditional, not guaranteed.
- Playback: An existing older app may continue to stream for some users, but Netflix does not promise ongoing service for outdated versions.
In other words, Netflix has moved the current app beyond iOS 16; that is not the same as confirming that the service has already disabled every older app.
Check your device’s software version
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then About.
- Read the number beside Version.
Netflix documents this route in its compatibility guidance. If the device says iOS 16 or iPadOS 16, check whether its model can upgrade: an iOS 16 device is not necessarily eligible for iOS 18.

Try these options before deleting Netflix
1. Check for an operating-system update
- Open Settings > General > Software Update.
- Install the newest version offered for that device.
- Return to the App Store and check Netflix’s compatibility again.
The available upgrade depends on the exact iPhone or iPad model. If the device cannot run iOS or iPadOS 18, updating will not meet the current Netflix app requirement.
2. Look for a previously acquired version
If you downloaded Netflix before using the same Apple ID, Apple may offer a last-compatible version. Netflix says users on iOS 12 through iOS 17 may be able to get the app this way, but availability is not universal.

- Open the App Store and tap your account or profile icon.
- Open Apps or Purchased, depending on the interface shown.
- Search your previously acquired apps for Netflix.
- If a cloud-download option appears, tap it. If Apple offers a last-compatible version, accept the prompt.
If Netflix was acquired under a different Apple ID, that account’s purchase history may be needed. If no compatible download is offered, this route will not provide a workaround.
3. Keep a working installation intact
If Netflix is installed and still works, avoid deleting it until you have checked whether a compatible redownload is available. Reinstalling cannot make an iOS 16 device run an app whose current minimum is iOS 18. Also avoid resetting the app unless necessary: Netflix says a reset removes downloaded titles.

If the installed app shows a forced-update message, updating the app alone will not solve the mismatch while the device remains on iOS 16. Check for an operating-system upgrade; if none is available, use another supported device.
Can you watch Netflix without the current iOS app?
On an iPad, try Safari
Netflix says iPads running iPadOS 14 or later can watch in HD using Safari. This is specific guidance for iPad; it is not a blanket guarantee that Safari on an iPhone running iOS 16 is a full substitute for the app. Browser viewing also does not provide every app feature, such as offline downloads.

Use another device you already have
Netflix lists supported device categories including Android phones and tablets, smart TVs, streaming media players, game consoles, and computers. Exact compatibility depends on the model, operating system, region, and plan. Check Netflix’s supported devices information for the device you plan to use.
If your iPhone or iPad cannot upgrade to iOS 18 and has never had Netflix, there is no guaranteed way to install the current app on it. Using an existing TV, console, computer, or other supported device may avoid an unnecessary purchase. Replacing a phone or tablet makes more sense as a broader app-compatibility and software-support decision than as a Netflix-only fix.

Downloads and ad-supported features have separate requirements
Netflix documents mobile downloads on iOS 12 or later, and says downloads on an ad-supported experience require iOS or iPadOS 16 or later. Those are feature-specific thresholds; they do not override the current app’s iOS/iPadOS 18 minimum. An iOS 16 requirement for a download feature does not mean the latest Netflix app can be installed on iOS 16.
What the App Store’s “Unable to Purchase” warning means
Netflix says a message that the app is not compatible typically means the device cannot run the newest version. Confirm the version at Settings > General > About. If it is iOS 16, the device is below the current requirement. Then check for a system update and, if Netflix was acquired previously, try the App Store redownload steps above. Deleting and reinstalling does not bypass the operating-system requirement.
Why an iOS 16 device may remain affected
The limitation is the device’s maximum supported operating system, not necessarily a fault with its hardware. Some devices that can run iOS 16 cannot upgrade to iOS 18. For those owners, an older Netflix copy might offer temporary access, but it may lack app updates and could stop working if Netflix changes compatibility requirements. A replacement device is only one option; another supported screen may be more practical, especially if offline mobile viewing is not essential.
Netflix’s published requirements can change. Check its live iPhone and iPad guidance and the App Store compatibility listing before making a device decision.
