That ended Kindle Newsstand as a subscription storefront—not every way to read periodicals on a Kindle. Previously delivered issues remain accessible, and some magazines can still be borrowed through Kindle Unlimited, though its borrowing rules changed in 2026.
What Amazon actually discontinued
Amazon’s support notice says it stopped offering new subscriptions to print and Kindle magazines and newspapers, as well as individual subscriptions through Amazon, effective March 9, 2023. Amazon directs readers seeking replacement print or digital subscriptions to publishers. The policy is documented on Amazon’s UK support site; availability and account details may differ by marketplace. Amazon’s Newsstand notice
The change did not mean every existing issue was deleted or that all magazines vanished from Kindle. It is useful to separate the services involved:
- New Amazon-billed subscriptions: no longer available under the stated policy.
- Previously delivered issues: Amazon says they remain accessible in supported Kindle apps and e-readers, and documents a route to deliver past issues from an account library.
- Kindle Unlimited magazines: some remain borrowable, but this is catalog access rather than a conventional issue-by-issue subscription.
- Publisher tools: Amazon’s Kindle Publishing site still describes workflows for periodicals. That is distinct from the discontinued consumer subscription storefront.
Amazon’s publisher site describes submission, preview, publication, and sales reporting for periodicals, so the consumer Newsstand change alone does not establish that Amazon stopped all periodical publishing or distribution. Amazon Kindle Publishing

How the change unfolded
| Date | What changed |
|---|---|
| November 19, 2007 | Amazon introduced Kindle with wireless access to books, newspapers, magazines, and blogs. Amazon’s launch announcement |
| March 9, 2023 | Amazon stopped selling new print and Kindle magazine and newspaper subscriptions under its stated policy. Amazon’s Newsstand notice |
| April 22, 2026 | Kindle Unlimited magazine issues began counting toward the 20-title borrowing limit, and Amazon ended automatic delivery of new issues through that service. Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited help page |
| July 30, 2026 | Amazon said it would automatically return borrowed titles above the 20-title limit. Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited help page |
The 2026 change is not the date Newsstand subscriptions ended. It concerns how Kindle Unlimited handles borrowed titles, including magazines.
What happens to existing subscriptions and issues?
Amazon says issues already delivered to the Kindle library remain accessible. If a digital subscription expired, past issues may still appear in the Amazon account’s content library for redelivery. Whether a particular issue is available can depend on the account, marketplace, device, and delivery history.
Amazon’s notice also says print subscriptions with paid terms extending beyond March 2024 could continue through the remaining term. For renewal, cancellation, refunds, support, or an issue that was never delivered, check the Amazon account record and contact Amazon or the publisher for that specific subscription. Future publisher offers and their terms are controlled by the publisher.

How to retrieve a past Kindle issue
- Sign in to the Amazon account associated with the Kindle subscription in a web browser.
- Open the account’s Content section.
- Select Magazine or Newspaper.
- Find the publication and issue, then choose Deliver Past Issue.
- Select a destination device or app if Amazon offers one for that issue.
Amazon documents this route in its Newsstand support notice. Menu names and delivery options can vary. If an issue is missing, confirm that you are signed into the original purchasing account and that the issue was previously delivered or remains available there. A visible library listing does not guarantee every device can download it; marketplace or device support may also affect delivery.

Only for readers who want occasional access to titles that happen to be in its catalog. Newsstand subscriptions delivered new issues automatically; Kindle Unlimited magazines are borrowed individually from a changing catalog. Borrowing does not give permanent ownership of an issue.
| Feature | Kindle Newsstand subscriptions | Kindle Unlimited magazines |
|---|---|---|
| Access model | Title-specific paid subscription | Borrowing from a broader subscription catalog |
| New issues | Automatic delivery was part of the subscription model | No automatic issue delivery under the policy effective April 22, 2026 |
| Retention | Previously delivered issues remain accessible according to Amazon’s notice | Borrowed access is conditional; catalog titles can change |
| Borrowing cap | Not applicable as a borrowing allowance | Magazine issues count toward the 20-title total from April 22, 2026 |
| Where borrowing starts | Subscription purchased through Amazon before sales ended | Amazon documents Android Kindle/Amazon shopping apps or a web browser; not direct borrowing in the iOS Amazon shopping app or on a Kindle e-reader |
Amazon says Kindle Unlimited magazines can be borrowed through the Kindle app for Android, the Amazon shopping app for Android, or a web browser; downloaded magazines can then be read in supported Kindle apps. The specific magazine catalog varies and can change. Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited help page

What the 20-title limit means
The limit applies to Kindle Unlimited titles borrowed overall, not just magazines. If a reader already has 20 books or other eligible titles checked out, another magazine requires returning a title first. Amazon said titles above the limit would be returned automatically beginning July 30, 2026. A returned or removed borrowed issue is not a purchased copy, and a title that leaves the catalog may no longer be available to borrow.
Where to read periodicals now
The right option depends on whether you want one publication, a bundle, a newspaper replica, or the lowest possible cost. Before subscribing, search for the exact title and confirm which devices and issue formats it supports.
One specific magazine or newspaper: subscribe directly
A publisher-direct subscription is the most dependable route when one title matters more than having a large bundle. Publishers may offer an app, website access, archives, newsletters, print, or downloadable issues; formats and terms vary. Amazon itself points former Newsstand customers to publishers for replacement offers. Amazon’s Newsstand notice

Apple News+: a bundled option for Apple users
Apple says News+ includes more than 500 magazines, newspapers, and digital publishers, with offline magazine issues, audio stories, and puzzles. Its US page lists a $12.99 monthly price after a free trial; price, eligibility, and catalog should be checked for the reader’s region and current offer. It is a poor fit for someone seeking Kindle e-reader reading or ownership of individual issues. Check the publication list before subscribing: Apple News+ and Apple News+ publications.
Magzter: a magazine-heavy catalog
Magzter advertises more than 10,000 magazines and newspapers. Its website and US App Store listing show different plan and price options, so there is no single price that applies across platforms; check the offer and renewal terms at checkout. A large catalog does not guarantee that a particular publication or newspaper is included. Magzter and Magzter’s US App Store listing.
PressReader: newspapers and international titles
PressReader advertises more than 7,000 newspapers and magazines, with offline downloads, print and text views, translation, and text-to-speech. Its US App Store listing describes Premium access on up to three devices, but does not establish a reliable current price in the information cited here. Publication-specific subscriptions and single issues may vary, so verify the exact title and offer. PressReader’s US App Store listing.

Public library: check local digital access
Some public libraries provide digital magazines or newspapers through third-party services at no additional charge to cardholders. Catalogs, participating platforms, and eligibility depend on the library system and location; check the library’s digital collection rather than assuming a service is universally available.
Already have Kindle Unlimited: use it selectively
For an existing member, borrowing a magazine can be convenient if the issue is in the catalog and the reader is willing to manage the shared borrowing limit. It is a poor substitute for a specific recurring title, automatic delivery, or a newspaper subscription unless the exact publication and workflow meet those needs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the change means for publishers
For consumers, Amazon is no longer the place to start a new Newsstand subscription under the stated policy; readers seeking a particular publication are directed to its publisher. That shifts the subscription transaction and customer relationship toward publisher channels when readers subscribe directly. Amazon’s separate publisher-facing Kindle Publishing site continues to describe a periodicals workflow, so the storefront shutdown should not be read as proof that every Amazon periodicals publishing tool has ended.
