Netflix said the miniseries reached No. 1 on its Global Top 10 for non-English shows in its second week—but that dated chart result is not evidence that it remains a global hit today.
What is Radioactive Emergency about?
The miniseries follows the aftermath of a radiological accident in Goiânia, Brazil. Two men take an unsecured radiotherapy machine from an abandoned hospital and dismantle it for scrap. When the machine’s cesium-137 source is exposed, radioactive material spreads through the city. Responders, physicians and physicists work to trace contamination and care for people who may have been exposed.
Netflix describes the series as a thriller and drama inspired by true events. It is a scripted dramatization, not a documentary, so its scenes and characters should not be treated as a complete historical record.
Is the series based on a true story?
Yes. It is inspired by the 1987 Goiânia cesium-137 accident. Netflix Tudum’s account of the event says four people died and more than 100,000 were tested for radioactive poisoning. Those figures are reported here as Netflix’s account of the incident.

The real event involved radioactive material found after the machine was dismantled and shared without those handling it understanding the danger. The series dramatizes that history through a narrative about the people responding to the contamination.
Did Radioactive Emergency really top a global chart?
According to Netflix’s April 3, 2026 report, the miniseries ranked first on the Global Top 10 for non-English shows in its second week on the service. Netflix reported more than 10.8 million views for that week and Top 10 placement in 55 countries. These are Netflix’s dated chart figures, not an independent measurement or a claim about its ranking now.

How does it compare with Chernobyl?
Both series dramatize radiological disasters, but they concern different events and settings. Radioactive Emergency focuses on the 1987 Goiânia accident in Brazil, with a five-episode story centered on tracing contamination and responding to its effects. The comparison is useful for orientation, not as a claim that the incidents were equivalent in scale; Radioactive Emergency is a dramatized series, not a documentary.
