Netflix’s Big Overhaul: What Changed and When

Netflix’s big redesign is actually a two-phase overhaul. Here’s what changed on TVs, what Clips adds to mobile, where the updates are available, and what Netflix’s AI-search beta really means.

Netflix is changing in stages, not through one single redesign. The first major update rebuilt the Netflix experience on TVs and streaming devices, with rollout beginning May 19, 2025. A separate mobile redesign began rolling out on April 30, 2026, adding a vertical short-video feed called Clips and putting more emphasis on visual discovery.

For documentary viewers, the practical result is a different way to find programs: the TV app surfaces more information before playback, while the mobile app is designed to help users discover titles through short previews and personalized recommendations. Availability still depends on your device, country, and the stage of Netflix’s rollout.

This is a two-phase Netflix overhaul

Netflix’s “big overhaul” is best understood as an ongoing product strategy with two distinct parts:

  • The TV redesign, announced in May 2025: a new homepage, persistent top navigation, a consolidated My Netflix area, more visible title information, and recommendations that Netflix says respond more quickly to recent activity.
  • The mobile redesign, announced in April 2026: streamlined navigation and Clips, a personalized vertical-video feed built around short excerpts from Netflix series, films, and specials.

These updates should not be treated as one simultaneous launch. The TV experience began rolling out in 2025, while the mobile changes arrived later and have their own market-by-market availability schedule.

Netflix’s official announcement describes the TV update as a simpler way to find something to watch, while its mobile announcement focuses on faster, more visual discovery. In other words, the company is trying to solve two related problems in different environments: reducing browsing friction on a television and increasing discovery and interaction on a phone.

Netflix’s 2025 announcement of the new TV experience provides the company’s primary description of the first phase.

What changed on Netflix TVs?

The TV redesign affects browsing rather than the underlying Netflix catalog or subscription structure. If your profile has received it, the most obvious changes are visible as soon as the Netflix homepage loads.

1. Search, Shows, Movies, Games, and My Netflix move to the top

The principal navigation shortcuts now appear at the top of the screen and are designed to remain visible while browsing. Depending on the account and device, the menu includes shortcuts for:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Search
  • Shows
  • Movies
  • Games
  • My Netflix

This is a meaningful change from an interface that primarily presents rows of recommendations. Instead of scrolling through the homepage to reach a particular part of Netflix, viewers can go directly to the relevant category or tool.

For someone looking specifically for a documentary, the Shows and Movies shortcuts can provide a more direct starting point than relying only on the recommendation rows. Search remains the better option when you already know the title, subject, filmmaker, or series you want to find.

Netflix’s Help Center says that the top-of-screen shortcuts are also a useful way to tell whether an account is using the new TV experience: if those menu options appear at the top of the screen, the redesign is active. The same help page notes that Games on TV is a beta feature whose availability can depend on the country and the hardware being used. See Netflix’s Help Center explanation of the new TV experience.

2. Recommendations are intended to react faster to viewing activity

Netflix says the redesigned homepage responds more quickly to what a member watches, explores, and interacts with. The stated goal is fresher, more relevant recommendation rows rather than a static homepage that changes slowly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That does not mean every row will immediately reflect your last viewing choice, nor does it guarantee that Netflix will surface a particular documentary. Recommendations are personalized and can be influenced by activity across a profile. If several people use the same profile, the homepage may reflect a mixture of interests.

The change is therefore less about adding a new documentary category and more about how Netflix decides what to place in front of you. A viewer who regularly watches environmental films, history programs, investigative documentaries, or true-crime series may see the homepage adjust over time, but Netflix has not published a guarantee that every genre or interest will receive a specific new row.

3. My Netflix brings saved and unfinished titles together

The new My Netflix destination consolidates several types of personal content, including:

  • Continue Watching titles
  • My List selections
  • Content marked with Remind Me

This creates a single place to return to programs you have started, saved, or flagged for later. For documentary viewers, that may be particularly useful when a film is too long to watch immediately or when you want to keep a series on a particular subject available without searching for it again.

My Netflix is not a new subscription tier and does not change what your plan includes. It is an organizational hub within the app.

4. More information appears before playback

Netflix has also moved more title information into the browsing experience. Depending on the title and device, viewers can see details such as:

  • A synopsis
  • Runtime
  • Award wins
  • Top 10 history
  • Key cast information

The practical benefit is that you can make a better decision without repeatedly opening a title page and backing out again. Runtime is especially useful when choosing a documentary for a limited block of time. A synopsis and cast information can also help distinguish between similarly titled films or decide whether a program matches your interests before playback begins.

The exact information shown can vary by title. Not every documentary will have award information, Top 10 history, or the same amount of cast data.

When did the TV redesign roll out?

Date What happened
May 7, 2025 Netflix formally announced the redesigned TV experience.
May 19, 2025 The global rollout began, according to Netflix’s Tudum explainer.
Following weeks and months in 2025 Netflix continued adding eligible televisions and TV streaming devices.

Netflix did not describe this as an update that reached every television and streaming device at exactly the same time. Most TVs and TV streaming devices were expected to be eligible, but additional devices were added as the rollout continued.

That makes the interface itself a more reliable indicator than the calendar. If you see the Search, Shows, Movies, Games, and My Netflix shortcuts across the top of the TV screen, your account and device are using the new experience. If you do not see them, the rollout may not have reached that hardware, or the device may not be eligible.

Netflix’s Tudum overview of the new TV layout is the clearest source for the rollout timing and the practical differences between the old and new browsing experience.

What is new in the Netflix mobile app?

The second phase is more than a visual refresh. Netflix’s mobile redesign adds a discovery layer built around short, vertical video.

  • Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight

Clips creates a personalized vertical feed

Clips is a feed of short video excerpts from Netflix series, films, and specials. It is designed to work more like a modern short-video discovery surface than a conventional streaming catalog.

Netflix says the feed is personalized according to what each member watches and interacts with. From a clip, users can:

  • Open the related title
  • Add the title to My List
  • Share the clip
  • Continue browsing through the feed

For documentary discovery, this could make it easier to encounter a film or series through a memorable scene, interview excerpt, subject, or visual moment rather than by searching for a genre label. It can also help viewers decide quickly whether a title is worth opening. However, a clip is a promotional or discovery sample, not a substitute for the full program and not evidence that the entire title has the same tone or subject as the excerpt.

Mobile navigation is being streamlined

Netflix says the revised mobile layout is intended to make it faster to find something to watch, listen to, or play. The company’s description positions the mobile app as a broader entertainment destination, not simply a smaller version of the TV catalog.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The strategy matters because phones are well suited to quick, visual browsing. A television interface is often used when someone has already decided to sit down and watch. A phone can be used in shorter sessions, making a vertical feed a way to turn idle browsing into title discovery.

Clips may expand beyond film and television

Netflix has said it plans to expand Clips beyond excerpts from shows, films, and specials. Possible future areas include:

  • Podcasts
  • Live programming
  • Themed collections organized around genres or interests

A June 10, 2026 APAC product announcement also discussed possible themed Clip collections involving reality-TV moments, behind-the-scenes content, and podcast snippets. These are planned or described areas of expansion, not a claim that every category is already available in every market.

Netflix’s mobile product announcement contains the company’s description of Clips and the broader direction of the redesign.

Where is the mobile redesign available?

The mobile rollout is also staged. Netflix initially announced the redesigned experience for nine markets:

  • United States
  • United Kingdom
  • Australia
  • Canada
  • India
  • Malaysia
  • Pakistan
  • the Philippines
  • South Africa

Netflix said the redesign would expand to the rest of the world in the following months. Its June 10 APAC announcement said the refreshed mobile experience was already available in Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines, India, and Malaysia, with rollout to Korea and Japan planned for July 2026.

Netflix subsequently updated its mobile announcement on July 14, 2026, identifying Brazil, France, Germany, Korea, and Mexico as markets where the new design was available. That later update confirms Korea as available, while the cited announcements do not establish that Japan had received the redesign. As of August 11, 2026, readers should not assume that Clips or the full mobile redesign is available in every country.

Timing Documented availability or plan
April 30, 2026 Netflix announced the mobile redesign and initial rollout in nine markets.
June 10, 2026 Netflix documented availability in Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines, India, and Malaysia; Korea and Japan were identified as planned July markets.
July 14, 2026 update Netflix said the design was also available in Brazil, France, Germany, Korea, and Mexico.
Following months Netflix said wider international expansion would follow, but the announcements do not provide a universal date for every country.

Because Netflix can update an app progressively, the absence of Clips may reflect market availability, app version, account eligibility, or a rollout that has not yet reached your account. The safest way to check is to use the latest official Netflix app available for your device and look for the new mobile navigation or Clips surface; the feature should not be assumed solely from the announcement date.

What about Netflix’s generative-AI search?

Netflix also discussed generative AI, but this is the part most likely to be overstated.

In its May 2025 TV announcement, Netflix said it was exploring generative AI for discovery through a small, opt-in beta on iOS. The example was conversational search: a member might ask for something “funny and upbeat” rather than enter a conventional title, actor, or genre query.

That announcement does not establish that:

  • AI search is available to every Netflix subscriber
  • The feature is available on every phone or TV
  • The entire redesigned Netflix experience is powered by generative AI
  • AI search has replaced standard Netflix search

The AI experiment was presented separately from the core TV homepage redesign. Unless Netflix specifically makes the feature available to your account and market, ordinary search and the existing recommendation system remain the relevant tools.

What to do if your TV has not changed

Compatibility and rollout checklist

  1. Look at the top of the Netflix homepage. The presence of the Search, Shows, Movies, Games, and My Netflix shortcuts indicates that the new TV experience is active.
  2. Check the device, not just the television. Netflix’s rollout covers eligible TVs and TV streaming devices, and eligibility can differ between models and platforms.
  3. Update the Netflix app and device software where applicable. This may help with ordinary app availability, but it cannot force a region-limited or account-staged rollout.
  4. Try Netflix’s Help Center guidance. Official support information is more reliable than assuming that every device received the redesign on May 19, 2025.
  5. Consider replacement hardware only if the existing device is the limitation. A 4K streaming stick can be a practical option for an older TV or unsupported built-in app, but Netflix does not require subscribers to buy one for the redesign.

A new streaming device may also improve app responsiveness or provide a more current operating environment, but it is not a guaranteed fix for a country-level rollout delay. Check current Netflix compatibility, the device’s supported resolution, available ports, and local availability before buying.

Will the overhaul improve Netflix?

That depends on what frustrates you most about the service.

If your problem is… The update may help by…
Too much scrolling before reaching a category Keeping shortcuts such as Search, Shows, Movies, and My Netflix at the top.
Forgetting what you saved or started Putting Continue Watching, My List, and Remind Me content in My Netflix.
Not knowing enough about a title before opening it Showing synopsis, runtime, awards, Top 10 history, and cast details while browsing.
Difficulty finding something new on a phone Using personalized Clips and direct actions such as opening a title or adding it to My List.
Wanting conversational recommendations Potentially using the limited opt-in iOS AI-search beta, if Netflix has enabled it for the account.

The trade-off is that more information and more discovery surfaces can also make Netflix feel busier. A vertical video feed may help a viewer find an appealing documentary, but it also introduces another stream of promotional content to browse. Likewise, recommendations can become more relevant while still making the catalog feel personalized around a narrow set of viewing habits.

Some of the public reaction has focused on precisely that concern. TechRadar reported criticism of the TV redesign and anticipated similar concerns about the mobile changes. Those are editorial and user-reaction observations, not independent evidence that the redesign has improved Netflix’s performance or satisfaction metrics. Netflix has not supplied a public, comprehensive measurement proving that the new interface reduces viewing time spent browsing or increases completion rates.

The larger strategy: less decision fatigue on TV, more engagement on mobile

The TV and mobile changes point in different but complementary directions.

On television, Netflix is trying to make the catalog easier to navigate. Persistent navigation, a better-organized personal hub, more metadata, and quicker recommendation adjustments all address the familiar problem of spending too long deciding what to watch.

On mobile, Netflix is moving toward discovery through short-form video. Clips can introduce a title before a member has searched for it, then offer immediate actions: watch, save, share, or keep browsing. That resembles the mechanics of social-video platforms, although Netflix’s feed is focused on its own entertainment catalog.

The combination suggests that Netflix is not abandoning its traditional catalog interface. Instead, it is adding different entry points for different viewing situations: direct navigation and richer context on a large screen, and fast visual sampling on a phone.

Bottom line

Netflix’s overhaul began with the TV homepage in 2025 and continued with a separate mobile redesign in 2026. The TV update introduced top-level navigation, My Netflix, more visible title details, and recommendations that Netflix says adapt more quickly to member activity. The mobile update added Clips, a personalized vertical feed intended to make discovering shows, films, and specials faster and more visual.

The most important caveat is availability. TV rollout continued across eligible devices after May 19, 2025, and Clips is not confirmed as universally available as of August 11, 2026. Check the interface on your own device and market rather than relying on a single global launch date. Generative-AI search should likewise be treated as a limited, opt-in iOS beta—not a universal feature of the redesign.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Netflix’s new interface one single redesign?

No. Netflix’s overhaul has two major phases: a TV experience announced in May 2025 and a separate mobile redesign announced in April 2026. They have different features and rollout schedules.

How can I tell whether my TV has the new Netflix layout?

Look for persistent shortcuts such as Search, Shows, Movies, Games, and My Netflix at the top of the Netflix screen. Netflix’s Help Center identifies that top menu as a sign that the new TV experience is active.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is Netflix Clips?

Clips is a personalized vertical-video feed of short excerpts from Netflix series, films, and specials. Users can open the related title, add it to My List, share the clip, or continue browsing.

Is Netflix’s AI search available to everyone?

No. Netflix initially described generative-AI search as a small, opt-in iOS beta. It should not be treated as a universal Netflix feature or as proof that the entire redesign is AI-powered.

Does buying a streaming stick guarantee the new Netflix layout?

No. A compatible streaming device may help if an older TV or unsupported built-in app is the hardware limitation, but Netflix’s rollout also depends on country, device eligibility, app availability, and account rollout timing.
