Netflix announced on February 8, 2023 that it was expanding its paid-sharing policy beyond Latin America, beginning in Canada, New Zealand, Portugal and Spain. The launch offered eligible Standard and Premium subscribers a way to add people who lived outside their household for a monthly fee. The prices Netflix announced then are historical, not current quotes.
What Netflix announced in February 2023
Netflix said it had been exploring ways to address account sharing in Latin America and was beginning a broader rollout in four additional countries. In its announcement, the company said its focus was giving members greater control over who could access their accounts. Netflix’s February 8, 2023 announcement, “An Update on Sharing”, described the expansion as starting “today” in Canada, New Zealand, Portugal and Spain.

For eligible Standard and Premium members, the launch option allowed up to two extra members who did not live in the account holder’s household. Netflix’s earlier Latin America announcement also described transferring a profile to a new account or an extra-member subaccount. That earlier exploration does not mean every Latin American country had the same rollout date or price.

Netflix’s announcement also said it estimated that around 100 million households were sharing accounts in 2023. The Associated Press reported that figure as Netflix’s estimate; it is not a current count or an independently measured total. The Associated Press’s contemporaneous report covered the announcement.
Can you share your Netflix account with someone who lives elsewhere now?
Netflix’s current Help Center says that in many countries, an eligible Standard or Premium account holder may add an extra member who does not live with them. The option is not universal: availability can depend on the country, subscription plan and billing provider. Netflix’s guidance is documented at its extra-member Help Center page.

The current Help Center does not establish the present extra-member price or availability in each of the four countries named in the 2023 announcement. Check the account’s local Netflix options and billing-provider terms before making a decision. Compare the displayed extra-member charge with the current price of a separate plan rather than relying on the historical launch figures above.

According to Netflix’s Help Center, an extra member has a separate login and one profile, and can watch on one device at a time. Netflix says the extra member may use the same video and audio quality as the account owner’s plan, with a stated 1080p limit and no spatial audio for an ad-supported extra-member slot.

An existing profile can be transferred to an extra-member account, but Netflix says the main profile, Kids profiles and PIN-protected profiles cannot be transferred. A person who wants their own account control and payment method should consider a separate account instead.

Country, plan and payment considerations
- Where it can be used: Netflix says extra-member accounts should primarily be used in the same country as the account owner’s membership. Someone living in a different country may need a separate account.
- Billing provider: A package provider may impose additional limits, and the extra-member option may not be available through every provider.
- Paying the extra-member charge: Netflix says the account owner can use a gift card or available account credit to pay monthly extra-member charges. A gift card is a payment method, not a way to bypass household or eligibility rules.
