Those numbers show reach, not whether a movie was good: Netflix’s view metric is based on hours watched divided by runtime, and the company says success is not determined by hours viewed alone.
What Netflix’s 1H 2024 report actually measures
Published September 19, 2024, Netflix’s report covers viewing from January through June 2024 and records more than 94 billion hours watched across the service. That is a measure of activity on Netflix, not a tally of films judged successful by critics or audiences. Netflix’s first-half 2024 report presents viewing totals and title-level data.

Netflix defines a “view” as hours viewed divided by a title’s runtime. It is therefore not necessarily a count of unique people, and it is not a completion rate, rating, or quality score. For titles released fewer than 91 days before the reporting cutoff, Netflix’s Q2 2024 shareholder letter says the view data runs from launch through July 14, 2024. Which movies drew the most viewing?
Netflix reported these view totals for several widely watched films in the period:

These figures are from Netflix’s 2024 report. They make the films examples of high engagement, but they cannot establish that any one is good or bad. The report does not provide critical reviews or audience ratings that would support a quality ranking.
Why a high view count is not a verdict on a movie
A view count answers a narrower question than “Was this film good?” It records viewing relative to runtime. It does not reveal why someone pressed play, whether they finished, or what they thought afterward. Nor does the same total necessarily represent the same number of viewers: the metric is derived from hours watched, not a unique-person count.

Comparisons also need context. Netflix’s general explanation says its engagement report includes titles watched for more than 50,000 hours and rounds reported hours to 100,000. The company points to its weekly Top 10 and Most Popular lists for comparisons that account for runtime and premiere dates. Release timing matters too: some titles in the reporting window may not have had a full 91 days of measurement by the cutoff. Netflix’s report explanation describes these reporting conventions.
Netflix itself cautions against treating hours as a stand-alone success test: “Success on Netflix comes in all shapes and sizes, and is not determined by hours viewed alone.” The company says it also considers whether a title thrilled its audience and the size of that audience relative to the title’s economics. That is a company’s account of how it assesses performance—not an independent assessment of artistic merit.

The report reflects a global audience, not one shared taste
Netflix says non-English stories made up nearly a third of all viewing in the first half of 2024, highlighting titles from countries including Spain, Korea, France, Italy, Japan, and India. The report’s global totals combine audiences with different languages and viewing preferences. A single ranked list cannot, by itself, show what all viewers value or how they judge a film.

That is an opinion, not a conclusion supported by Netflix’s engagement figures. The report can show that certain titles attracted substantial viewing. To call them bad as a factual judgment would require separate evidence—such as identified review scores or audience ratings—and a clear account of which source and measure are being used. Without that evidence, the defensible conclusion is about popularity, not quality.
