On February 8, 2023, Netflix began rolling out paid account sharing in Canada, New Zealand, Portugal, and Spain. The change treated an account as belonging to one household, while eligible subscribers could pay to add people living elsewhere. It did not mean that every family profile or every trip away from home was blocked.
Update: October 3, 2026. The prices below are Netflix’s announced launch prices from February 2023, not verified current rates. Plan eligibility and availability can vary by country, billing arrangement, and package.

What Netflix announced
Netflix said the rollout was intended to give members more control over account access while addressing account use across multiple households. At the time, the company estimated that more than 100 million households worldwide were sharing accounts. Netflix’s stated policy was that an account is for one household; people outside it could use an eligible paid Extra Member slot or establish their own membership.
The launch combined four tools: Netflix Household settings for devices used at the main home, account access and device management, profile transfer for people moving to their own membership, and paid Extra Member slots for eligible subscribers. Netflix had tested paid-sharing approaches earlier, including in Latin America, before this broader rollout: Netflix’s earlier paid-sharing update.

What counts as a Netflix Household?
Netflix describes a household as the devices connected to the internet at the main place where the account holder watches Netflix. Its Help Center says it uses signals such as IP address, device IDs, and account activity to establish a household, and does not use GPS to determine a device’s precise physical location. Netflix Household guidance.
A profile or password does not make someone part of the same household. A spouse or child living at the main residence can use the account on their own phone or laptop; a relative living in another home is not automatically included because of a family relationship or shared profile. Multiple simultaneous streams describe how many devices can watch at once, not whether viewers in separate homes are authorized under the household rule.

- Amazon.com Gift Cards never expire and carry no fees.
- Multiple gift card designs and denominations to choose from.
- Redeemable towards millions of items store-wide at Amazon.com or certain affiliated websites.
- Available for immediate delivery. Gift cards sent by email can be scheduled up to a year in advance.
- No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.
Second homes, student accommodation, seasonal work, and frequent travel can complicate verification. Netflix’s stated signals do not guarantee that every legitimate device will be classified correctly, so a household member away for a period may need to complete the service’s verification steps.
Who could add an Extra Member?
At launch, Netflix said eligible Standard or Premium members in supported markets could pay for up to two people outside their household. The account owner paid for each slot; the extra member had separate credentials and a profile rather than simply using another simultaneous screen.

Current Help Center guidance adds conditions: Extra Members must be activated in the same country where the account owner created the account, and the option may not be available with ad-supported plans, some third-party-billed accounts, or packages that include Netflix. Availability also depends on country and package. If the option is absent, check Netflix’s current sharing and Extra Member guidance and the account’s plan and billing details rather than assuming every Standard or Premium account qualifies.
What can someone borrowing an account do?
Join as an Extra Member
This can suit someone who wants to remain attached to the account owner’s payment arrangement while using separate credentials. It depends on the owner having an eligible plan and billing setup, and on the country requirements being met.

Open a separate Netflix account
A separate account gives the former borrower control over billing and account ownership. It may be the more practical route if Extra Member is unavailable, the person lives in another country, or they want an arrangement they can manage independently. Current membership prices are not established here; check Netflix’s signup page.
Transfer a profile
Netflix’s profile-transfer feature can carry personalization such as recommendations, viewing history, My List, saved games, and settings to a separate account. It does not transfer the original account’s billing relationship, household status, or permission to keep using that account. See the launch announcement and current Help Center guidance.

Netflix said household members could keep watching on personal devices while traveling and could sign in on a new TV, such as one in a hotel or holiday rental. In practice, an away-from-home device may prompt for verification. Netflix’s current instructions describe temporary access codes delivered to the account email address or phone; its guidance says a code expires after 15 minutes. Netflix also advises opening the app on the household’s Wi-Fi at least once a month to reduce interruptions while away. These steps support travel, but do not turn regular use from another home into household use. Netflix’s travel and household troubleshooting instructions.
- Travel with your own household account: supported, but verification may be required.
- Hotel or rental TV: may be treated as an away-from-home device and require temporary verification.
- Permanent residence elsewhere: generally calls for an eligible Extra Member slot or a separate account.
- Student or second-home use: do not assume uninterrupted access; follow the applicable verification process and household guidance.
If Netflix says your device is outside the household
- Read the message on the affected device. If you are the account owner and have moved or changed your main viewing location, use the household update or confirmation option shown by Netflix.
- If you are traveling, choose “I’m Traveling” on a TV or “Watch Temporarily” on a phone or computer when that option appears.
- Request the temporary code sent to the account’s email address or phone number, then enter the four-digit code on the affected device before it expires.
- If the code does not arrive, check spam, junk, and promotions folders, verify the account contact details, and request a new code. The temporary option may not appear in every situation, including account-information problems or after a device reaches its request limit.
- If you do not recognize the verification request, review account access, sign out unfamiliar devices, and change the password. Netflix provides the current steps in its travel troubleshooting guide.
Why Netflix made the change—and what the company later said
Netflix said account sharing across more than 100 million households affected its ability to invest in television and films. The commercial aim was to convert people borrowing accounts into paying members or paid Extra Members. In its Q4 2023 shareholder letter, Netflix said it believed paid sharing had successfully addressed account sharing and reported that many millions of members were using Transfer Profile and Extra Member features. That is Netflix’s own assessment, not independent proof that paid sharing alone caused later membership or revenue changes. Netflix’s Q4 2023 shareholder letter.
What the 2023 rollout does—and does not—mean now
The February 8, 2023 announcement is a historical launch event, not a new 2026 rollout. It established the policy approach and the four initial markets discussed here; the launch fees should not be reused as current prices. Netflix’s current Help Center still says accounts may not be shared outside the household and directs people outside it to create an account or use an Extra Member option where supported. Because plans, prices, billing arrangements, and availability can change, confirm the present options in the relevant country and account before making a payment decision: Netflix’s sharing guidance.
