Netflix has discontinued its Basic ad-free plan. In the United States, affected customers now choose between Standard with ads, Standard, and Premium; rollout timing differed by country. Some subscribers say the change made them cancel, but Netflix’s public information does not establish a company-wide cancellation surge caused by the removal. Netflix said the initial cancellation reaction in Canada was low, and it stopped publishing the detailed membership figures needed to measure later effects.
The practical trade-off is clear: keep Netflix ad-free by paying for Standard or Premium, pay less with advertising and a potentially smaller catalog, use an eligible bundle, pause if the account qualifies, or cancel.
What happened to Netflix Basic?
“Basic” referred to Netflix’s former entry-level ad-free plan. It is not the same product as the current ad-supported tier, which Netflix calls Standard with ads in the United States. Netflix’s current plans page explicitly says Basic has been discontinued: Netflix plan information.
The change was phased in rather than announced as one worldwide switch:

- 2023: Netflix stopped offering Basic to new and returning customers in Canada and said the cancellation reaction there was low.
- 2024: Netflix shareholder communications referred to phasing out Basic in the United Kingdom and Canada; customer notices and reporting also described removal in the United States and France.
- Now: Basic is no longer listed on the U.S. plan page, while prices and availability remain country-specific.

What Netflix charges now in the United States
The following prices were listed on Netflix’s U.S. plans page on August 16, 2026. Taxes may apply, and customers billed through partners or bundles may see different prices or options.

Netflix also listed extra-member pricing of $7.99 with ads and $9.99 without ads in the United States. Standard costs $11 more per month than Standard with ads, or $132 more per year before taxes. Premium costs $216 more per year than Standard with ads.

Are users canceling because Basic disappeared?
Some users have reported canceling after receiving a notice that Basic was ending or after seeing the price of the ad-free replacement. Those reports demonstrate individual frustration, not the size of a national or global trend.
Netflix said in 2023 that the cancellation reaction to the Canadian phaseout was low. Its 2024 annual filing lists broader reasons people cancel—insufficient use, household budget pressure, dissatisfaction with content, competing services, and unresolved support problems—but does not isolate Basic removal. Beginning with its first-quarter 2025 filing, Netflix stopped reporting detailed membership metrics, so current aggregate cancellation effects cannot be responsibly calculated from its public filings: Q1 2025 filing and 2024 annual filing.
That leaves a defensible conclusion: Netflix removed the cheapest ad-free choice, which can make cancellation more attractive, but there is no verified evidence of a company-wide “mass exodus” attributable specifically to the policy.

What choices did former Basic subscribers receive?
Move to Standard
Standard is the closest direct replacement for an ad-free Basic household that needs 1080p, two simultaneous streams, and downloads on two devices. It preserves uninterrupted viewing but costs substantially more than the former entry tier.

This is the lowest listed direct Netflix price. The trade is commercial interruptions and possible catalog or device restrictions, not merely a different price for the same service.
Move to Premium
Premium is aimed at households using four simultaneous streams or 4K/HDR and spatial-audio features. It is usually poor value for one viewer with a 1080p television.

Use a bundle
Mobile, internet, cable, and television providers may include Netflix. A bundle can reduce the effective cost, but the provider may control billing, eligibility, cancellation, and whether the included Netflix tier has ads. Netflix’s partner guidance is at this help page.
Pause or cancel
Eligible accounts can pause for one month at a time, up to three months total. No streaming or downloads work during a pause, and the option depends on the replacement plan and payment method. Check the Cancel Membership page rather than assuming eligibility.
Is Standard with ads a true substitute?
Netflix’s advertising documentation says most shows and films are available, but a small number may be locked because of licensing restrictions. Locked titles display a lock icon. Ads can run before and during selected programs, cannot be skipped or fast-forwarded, and are described by Netflix as a few short ads per hour, although interruption patterns vary by title and playback context.

- Catalog: Some licensed titles are unavailable on the ad tier.
- Devices: Older devices that cannot update Netflix software may not support the ad experience.
- Downloads: The U.S. listing allows two downloads on Standard with ads, compared with six on Premium.
- Personalization: Netflix says ad selection can use interactions, general location, information supplied by the user, and—unless opted out—interactions with some unaffiliated apps or websites.

- Open Netflix in a web browser.
- Open the Change Plan page from the account area.
- Select the desired plan.
- Choose Continue, Update, or the equivalent confirmation control.
- Confirm the change and check the next billing details.
Netflix says an upgrade generally starts immediately and can alter the billing date or create a prorated charge. A downgrade normally starts on the next billing date. Partner-billed customers may need to make the change through that partner. Details: Netflix plan-change instructions.
How to cancel without accidentally continuing to pay
- Open the Netflix account page.
- Choose Manage your membership.
- Select Cancel.
- Select Finish Cancellation.
- Keep the confirmation email.
Deleting the app, signing out, or removing a device does not cancel billing. A normal paid account usually remains watchable until the end of the current billing period. If the account has no Netflix cancellation button, identify the payment partner in the Membership section and cancel there. After closure, Netflix retains viewing activity, recommendations, account details, and certain game data for 24 months, so a restart within that period can restore much of the account history.

Which option fits your household?
Choose Standard with ads when
- The lowest monthly bill matters most.
- Commercial breaks are acceptable.
- Your regular titles appear on the ad-supported catalog.
- Your devices support the plan and you do not need more than two downloads.
Choose Standard when
- You want ad-free 1080p viewing.
- Two simultaneous streams and two downloads are enough.
- You prefer a conventional Netflix experience without Premium’s 4K cost.
Choose Premium when
- Four people regularly watch at once.
- You own a 4K/HDR setup and value those formats.
- Extra-member capacity justifies the higher bill.
Cancel or pause when
- You watch only occasionally or are keeping Netflix for one future show.
- Ads are unacceptable and Standard is too expensive.
- Another service or an existing bundle covers your viewing needs.
- You expect to return soon and your account offers the pause option.
Important edge cases
- Partner billing: Telecom, cable, and internet packages may hide Netflix’s normal controls and impose their own cancellation process.
- Apple billing: Apple subscriptions generally must be canceled through Apple, more than 24 hours before renewal to prevent the next charge; some legacy accounts must close before rejoining with another payment method.
- Country changes: Prices, taxes, currencies, payment methods, and plan availability vary by country. Moving countries generally requires canceling and restarting in the new country: Netflix country and account guidance.
- Notice versus cancellation: A customer saying “Netflix canceled my Basic plan” may mean Netflix discontinued the plan, required a replacement choice, changed a partner entitlement, or the customer personally canceled. Payment failure is a separate event.
Why Netflix made the change
Netflix’s public strategy points to a simpler lineup and a larger advertising business. Removing the cheapest ad-free tier can move price-sensitive viewers to the ads plan, where Netflix earns subscription revenue plus advertising revenue, while customers who refuse ads move to Standard or Premium. Netflix described the ads tier as a lower consumer price with an additional revenue stream. In its 2026 first-quarter shareholder letter, Netflix said the U.S. ads plan was $8.99 and represented more than 60% of new membership additions in that quarter; it forecast about $3 billion in advertising revenue for 2026. Those figures describe advertising strategy, not the cancellation impact of Basic removal: Q1 2025 shareholder letter and Q1 2026 shareholder letter.
Bottom line
Netflix really did remove Basic ad-free, and affected subscribers faced a forced economic choice: pay more for ad-free viewing, accept ads and restrictions for a lower bill, find a bundle, pause if eligible, or leave. Cancellation stories are credible as individual experiences, but Netflix’s available reporting cannot prove that the policy caused a broad cancellation surge.
