Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf Netflix, Prime Video, or Hulu turns green, purple, washed out, or blocky on an Xbox, first separate a network-quality problem from an HDR/HDMI problem. A whole-screen color cast that begins when playback starts usually indicates an HDR10, Dolby Vision, HDMI, or TV-input negotiation failure—not slow internet. Quit the apps, power-cycle the Xbox and TV, then open Profile & system > Settings > General > TV & display options > Video modes and temporarily turn off Allow Dolby Vision. Test again; if necessary, also turn off Allow HDR10. If disabling HDR clears the picture, re-enable HDR10 first and leave Dolby Vision off while you isolate the incompatible part of the chain.
Identify the symptom before changing settings
| What you see | Most likely direction |
|---|---|
| Green, purple, pink, or unnatural tint | HDR/Dolby Vision negotiation, HDMI path, or TV input mode |
| Washed-out gray HDR | HDR picture-mode or format mismatch |
| Large color bands or posterization | HDR conversion or display processing; test SDR and another title |
| Soft, blocky, mosaic-like video | Adaptive streaming quality, network congestion, or service conditions |
| Sparkles, flicker, black screen, or signal dropouts | HDMI cable, port, receiver, switch, or bandwidth problem |
| Only one title is affected | Title-specific encoding or catalog issue |
Netflix treats distorted color separately from low-quality or pixelated playback. An issue affecting every title and app points toward the console, display, HDMI chain, or app environment; one title should be reported to the streaming service. See Netflix’s video-issue guidance and its troubleshooting steps.
Use the fastest fix path
- Quit Netflix, Prime Video, or Hulu completely from the Xbox Home screen.
- Hold the Xbox power button until it shuts down. Unplug it, wait at least 30 seconds, reconnect it, and restart. Power-cycle the TV too.
- Go to Profile & system > Settings > General > TV & display options > Video modes.
- Turn off Allow Dolby Vision and test the same title.
- If the corruption remains, turn off Allow HDR10 and test again.
- If HDR-off playback is clean, turn HDR10 back on first. Keep Dolby Vision disabled temporarily; this is a diagnostic workaround, not proof that Dolby Vision itself is defective.
Xbox labels can change slightly with system updates. Xbox applications may switch the TV from SDR into HDR10 or Dolby Vision when playback begins, which explains why the dashboard and games can look normal until a video starts (Microsoft’s Xbox media documentation).
Check the TV’s HDMI input configuration
TVs often require a per-input setting for high-bandwidth HDR. Depending on the manufacturer, it may be called HDMI Enhanced, Enhanced Format, UHD Color, Deep Color, HDMI Ultra HD Deep Color, Input Signal Plus, or a 4K/HDR mode.

- Enable the enhanced 4K/HDR option for the HDMI input used by the Xbox.
- If that mode is unstable or unavailable, try the TV’s recommended 4K/HDR port.
- After changing it, restart both the TV and Xbox.
- Test with Dolby Vision and then HDR10 disabled to determine whether the input handles SDR, HDR10, and Dolby Vision differently.
For Netflix 4K/HDR, the connected TV and HDMI path should support HDCP 2.2 or later; the compatible port is often, but not always, HDMI 1 (Netflix’s Xbox HDR requirements).
Remove intermediate HDMI equipment
Temporarily connect the Xbox directly to the TV by HDMI, bypassing an AV receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch, splitter, or capture device. If the image becomes normal, that intermediary may lack support for the negotiated 4K, HDR10, Dolby Vision, HDCP, or refresh-rate combination, or it may need a firmware update. Use ARC/eARC for audio where appropriate. Xbox and Netflix both recommend a direct-TV test (Xbox TV guidance).

Test the HDMI cable and port
- Disconnect and reconnect both cable ends firmly.
- Try another HDMI input on the TV.
- Substitute a known-good, certified cable suitable for the Xbox’s resolution and HDR mode; the cable supplied with the console is a useful comparison.
- If possible, test the Xbox on another TV.
A cable is a meaningful suspect when substitution removes sparkles, flicker, black screens, or color corruption. An expensive “premium” cable is not automatically better; buy only a correctly rated, certified replacement when the test identifies the cable or its length as the problem. Netflix lists alternate ports, cables, displays, and bypassing receivers among its recommended tests (Netflix troubleshooting).
When the problem really is network pixelation
Network adaptation normally produces lower resolution, softness, blockiness, buffering, or a delayed quality ramp—not a stable green or purple cast across the screen.

- Pause for a minute, then resume and test another title.
- Run the Xbox network test and compare another streaming app.
- Use Ethernet temporarily if available.
- Check whether other household devices are consuming bandwidth.
- Compare the same title in the TV’s built-in app or on another device.
Netflix lists a stable connection of at least 15 Mbps as part of its Xbox HDR guidance, but that threshold does not guarantee sustained performance over every Wi-Fi or household network. Its low-quality playback guidance is at Netflix’s quality troubleshooting page.
Reset only the affected app
- Quit the app and restart the console.
- Sign out and back in. In Netflix, use Get Help > Sign out when available.
- Install pending Xbox and app updates.
- Uninstall and reinstall the app if only that service remains affected.
- If Netflix offers Get Help > Video > HDR On/HDR Off, use it as an additional test; the control is not present on every Xbox configuration (Netflix HDR controls).
Do not factory-reset the Xbox as an early response. A reset removes saved settings, apps, and account information and is disproportionate to a format-handshake fault.

| All apps are blocky or low resolution | Network or service quality | Test Ethernet, another title, and another device |
| Apps have wrong colors but games are normal | HDR/Dolby Vision or TV HDR mode | Disable Dolby Vision, then HDR10 |

| Problem follows Xbox to another TV | Xbox configuration or hardware | Update, reset video settings, then contact Xbox |
| Problem stays with one TV input | TV port or input configuration | Use another input, enable enhanced mode, and update TV firmware |
| TV’s native app is clean but Xbox app is not | Xbox HDMI/HDR path or Xbox app | Test SDR, disable Dolby Vision, and reinstall the app |
| SDR works but HDR is corrupted | HDR format negotiation | Use HDR10 instead of Dolby Vision, or SDR temporarily |
What to do after the diagnosis
Contact the Xbox manufacturer or support channel when the fault follows the console across displays, ports, and known-good cables. Contact the TV manufacturer when multiple sources fail on that TV after firmware and input checks. Contact the streaming service when one title or one app remains faulty after reinstalling. Xbox’s official references include 4K/HDR troubleshooting and HDR support.
This guidance covers Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X. Netflix does not support new app downloads on Xbox 360 after the Xbox 360 Store retirement on July 29, 2024 (Netflix device support).

The Bottom Line
Start with a full restart and the Dolby Vision toggle, then isolate HDR10, the TV’s enhanced HDMI mode, intermediate equipment, cable, and port. Preserve HDR10 if it works; use SDR only as a temporary fallback while you identify the component that fails the HDR handshake.
