Netflix Premium costs $26.99 a month in the United States before tax, as of August 16, 2026. That is $3.01 short of $30, although taxes, partner billing or an extra-member add-on can push a real bill to—or above—that level. Premium is worth the price mainly for households that can use its 4K/HDR picture, four simultaneous streams, spatial audio and six-device download allowance. For a solo viewer on a 1080p screen, it is usually unnecessary.

The following is direct-billed U.S. pricing checked August 16, 2026. Final prices can vary by taxes, country, billing partner and account.

Netflix raised U.S. prices in March 2026: Premium increased from $24.99 to $26.99, Standard from $17.99 to $19.99, and Standard with ads from $7.99 to $8.99, according to Bloomberg. Netflix says it generally emails customers about a price change roughly a month before the affected billing date; check your account payment history for the amount you will actually pay.
What Premium adds for $7 more than Standard
Premium costs $7 more each month than Standard—$84 more per year before tax. Its value comes from several separate benefits, not simply a bigger catalog:

Netflix’s plan details do not promise that every title is 4K or HDR. Premium cannot upgrade a 1080p television, repair weak Wi-Fi or force a title to stream at a format it does not offer.
When 4K is worth $7 a month
The upgrade makes the most sense when your main viewing happens on a large, modern 4K television, you sit close enough to resolve additional detail, and you watch films, animation, nature documentaries or major Netflix productions where image quality matters. HDR can add more convincing highlights and shadows when the television handles Netflix’s HDR formats correctly.
Do not assume every viewer will see a dramatic difference. Viewing distance, screen size, eyesight, calibration, source quality and personal sensitivity all matter. On a phone, tablet, small laptop or 1080p television, the practical difference is often limited. Background viewing and heavily compressed or non-4K titles also reduce the benefit.

When four streams matter more than picture quality
Premium is easier to justify for a household that regularly has three or four people watching at once—for example, a parent on the main television, another viewer in a bedroom and one or two people on tablets. Two profiles do not equal two streams, and four profiles do not require Premium; the relevant limit is simultaneous playback.
If one or two people normally watch at a time, Premium’s extra capacity may sit unused. A larger family may still value the plan even if only one screen is 4K, because avoiding interruptions is its main benefit.
Spatial audio and downloads: useful, but conditional
Spatial audio is a Premium feature, but it is not a guarantee of better sound in every room. Compatible programming and equipment are required; basic television speakers may provide little noticeable improvement. Likewise, six download devices help a family or frequent traveler more than a single viewer. Download availability can vary by title and plan.

Standard is the overlooked middle ground
Standard is often the rational choice for ad-averse viewers. It removes advertising and keeps two simultaneous streams for $19.99, while avoiding Premium’s $7 surcharge. Choose it when your devices are 1080p, your household rarely watches concurrently on more than two screens, and spatial audio or expanded downloads do not matter.
When Standard with ads wins
At $8.99, the ad-supported plan saves $11 a month versus Standard and $18 versus Premium. It includes 1080p, two simultaneous devices and downloads. Netflix warns that some titles may be unavailable because of licensing restrictions; check a specific movie or series before downgrading using Netflix’s ad-plan information.
It is a strong fit for light viewers, students, people rotating among services and households using 1080p screens. It is a poor fit if you strongly dislike interruptions, require the complete catalog, need extra-member access or joined Netflix specifically for a title excluded from the ad tier.

Premium does not solve password sharing
Netflix distinguishes people who live together from users in another household. Premium is not an unlimited family-and-friends plan. In eligible markets, Netflix may allow up to two paid extra members, but slots, prices, eligibility and restrictions vary by country and billing arrangement. Ad-supported accounts do not use the same extra-member mechanism.
Netflix support explains the rules in its article on sharing an account. Some reports have cited about $9.99 per month for an ad-free extra member, but use the amount shown inside your own account rather than a published estimate. Compare that total with separate subscriptions before adding anyone.

- Confirm that the main television or monitor is genuinely 4K and supports HDR.
- Check that your streaming stick, box, smart-TV app and HDMI/receiver/soundbar path support the formats.
- Verify that the shows you watch are offered in 4K or HDR.
- Use reliable broadband and test Wi-Fi near the viewing device. Congestion, an overloaded router or weak coverage can trigger automatic quality reductions.
- For spatial audio, check compatibility for both the title and your audio hardware.
Netflix notes that Ultra HD and HDR depend on internet service and device capabilities; a “4K TV” alone is not a guarantee.

The annual-cost test
Before tax, keeping a plan for 12 months costs:
- Premium: $323.88
- Standard: $239.88
- Standard with ads: $107.88
Premium therefore costs $84 more per year than Standard and $216 more than Standard with ads. If you watch only one or two releases annually, subscribe for the month or months you need, then downgrade or cancel. Netflix supports online plan changes and cancellation, making rotation practical.

Verdict: Premium is a specialist upgrade, not the default Netflix plan. Pay $26.99 before tax when your household will regularly use 4K/HDR, four streams, spatial audio or six-device downloads. Otherwise, Standard delivers ad-free Netflix for less, while Standard with ads—or a rotate-and-cancel strategy—usually offers better value.
