Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Before troubleshooting, check compatibility: Netflix currently says its latest iPhone and iPad app requires iOS or iPadOS 18 or later. An iOS 16 or 17 device may still be able to use a previously downloaded compatible version, but that is not guaranteed. Don’t delete Netflix until you know the App Store will let you download it again.
Check your version at Settings > General > About > Version. If your device supports iOS 18 or later, upgrading is the most durable fix. If it cannot, no restart or network change can make it run an app version that requires a newer operating system. Netflix’s iPhone and iPad guidance explains current requirements; its compatibility guidance says iOS 12–17 users may be able to redownload the app if they downloaded it before with the same Apple ID.

Match the symptom to the right fix
| What happens | Start here |
|---|---|
| Netflix will not open or closes immediately | Force-close the app, restart the device, then check for updates. |
| The app stays on a loading screen | Check the connection and restart the home network. |
| “Cannot play title” appears | Test the network and restart the device. |
| You are repeatedly asked to sign in | Sign out and back in; reset or reinstall only if needed. |
| Black screen but sound continues | Check video output, display connections, and any adapter. |
| Netflix is missing from the App Store | Check iOS compatibility and whether this Apple ID previously downloaded Netflix. |
| Downloads fail | Check available storage and whether the app, account, and device support the download. |
| An update will not install | Check the iOS requirement shown by the App Store. |
These are diagnostic starting points, not guarantees. Netflix treats freezing, playback errors, Error 107, black-screen playback, and app compatibility as distinct problems. Its guidance for freezing and loading, “Cannot play title”, Error 107, and black screens with sound covers separate branches.
1. Check compatibility before deleting Netflix
Open Settings > General > About > Version and note the installed iOS or iPadOS version. Then open the App Store, search for Netflix, and see whether an update is offered.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
If the App Store says Netflix is not compatible or shows “Unable to Purchase,” the current app version may require a newer operating system than your device can run. Netflix says iOS 12–17 users may be offered a previously downloaded compatible version, but users who never downloaded Netflix with that Apple ID may need another device. If Netflix is already installed on an older device, do not remove it until you have confirmed you can redownload it. Netflix’s app availability guidance explains where to get the official iPhone and iPad app.
If your device supports iOS 18 or later, update it when possible. If it does not, try an older compatible version only if the App Store offers one; otherwise use another supported device. On an iPad running iPadOS 14 or later, Netflix says Safari can play video in HD, but browser viewing may not offer every app feature.
2. Force-close Netflix and reopen it
Use this for a frozen app or one that will not respond; routinely closing every app is unnecessary.
iPhone or iPad without a Home button
- Swipe up from the bottom edge and pause near the middle of the screen.
- Find the Netflix preview and swipe it up to close the app.
- Return to the Home Screen and open Netflix again.
Device with a Home button
- Press the Home button twice quickly.
- Find Netflix and swipe its preview up.
- Return to the Home Screen and reopen Netflix.
Apple recommends force-closing an app when it stops responding, closes unexpectedly, or will not open. Netflix also recommends quitting the app for iPhone and iPad loading or playback problems.

3. Restart the iPhone or iPad
A full restart can clear a temporary device or app state that force-closing did not resolve.
- On most current iPhones, press and hold the side button and either volume button until the power-off slider appears.
- Drag the slider and wait at least 10 seconds.
- Press and hold the side button to turn the iPhone back on.
- Open Netflix and test the problem again.
Button combinations vary by model; if the slider does not appear, follow Apple’s instructions for your specific device. Netflix recommends restarting an iPhone or iPad for playback issues, and Apple lists restarting as an app troubleshooting step. Netflix playback instructions and Apple’s app support guide provide more detail.
4. Update Netflix, then iOS if your device allows it
Check for a Netflix update
- Open the App Store.
- Tap your profile icon.
- Look for Netflix under available updates.
- Tap Update if it appears.
Check for an iOS update
- Open Settings > General > Software Update.
- Install an available update if your device supports it.
Apple advises updating the app first and the device software if no app update is available. But if an iOS 16 or 17 device is told that Netflix requires iOS 18, the App Store’s requirement is a compatibility limit—not a problem that force-closing or retrying the update will solve. See Apple’s app troubleshooting steps and Netflix’s advice for device software and playback problems.
5. Test the internet connection and restart your home network
First find out whether the problem follows Netflix, the device, or the network:

- Open Safari and visit another reliable website.
- Try Netflix on another device connected to the same Wi-Fi.
- If available, switch temporarily to cellular data or another Wi-Fi network.
- Visit fast.com to test the connection to Netflix’s service.
If Netflix fails across devices on the same home network, restart the modem and router:
- Turn off the iPhone or iPad.
- Unplug the modem and router.
- Wait 30 seconds, then plug them back in.
- Wait about one minute, or until the connection returns.
- Turn the device back on and test Netflix.
Hotels, schools, cafés, workplaces, and other public Wi-Fi networks may block or limit streaming. Complete any sign-in page for the network, then test another connection before changing advanced settings. If Netflix continues to fail across devices on your home network, ask your internet provider about an outage, router trouble, or network settings. Netflix recommends network checks, restarting the home network, and fast.com for loading problems; see its freezing and stuck-loading guidance and playback-error guidance.
6. Reset Netflix or reinstall it—with care
Try the reset control first if it is available. Resetting or reinstalling removes downloaded titles, so avoid these steps if you need offline viewing and cannot download them again soon.
Use Netflix’s reset control if present
- Force-close Netflix.
- Open Settings, scroll down, and tap Netflix.
- Turn on Reset if the control appears.
- Reopen Netflix and sign in again.
The control may not appear on every device or app version. Netflix says resetting removes downloaded titles; it is not a universal iOS cache-clearing button. See Netflix’s iPhone and iPad instructions.

Reinstall only if you can redownload it
- Before deleting Netflix on iOS 16 or 17, check the App Store for availability with the same Apple ID.
- Touch and hold Netflix, tap Remove App, then Delete App and confirm.
- Open the App Store, search for Netflix, and tap Get or the cloud icon if offered.
- Sign in and download titles again as needed.
Reinstalling signs you out and deletes downloads. Netflix’s Error 107 guidance includes reinstalling and restarting as remedies, but neither is guaranteed to fix every failure. Its older-iOS compatibility guidance is why checking redownload eligibility first matters.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Sign out, then follow the exact error
If the app opens but login or playback remains broken, sign out and back in. In Netflix, tap My Netflix in the lower-right corner, tap the profile name at the top, choose Sign Out, and confirm. Sign in again and test one title. Netflix documents this route in its iPhone and iPad instructions.
Error 107
Netflix says Error 107 can be caused by problematic data stored on the device. Restarting and reinstalling are listed remedies; reinstall only after checking that you can download the app again, and remember that downloads will be removed. See Netflix Error 107 help.
“Cannot play title”
This message usually points to a network connection problem, but it does not prove that the internet is completely down. Test another network and restart the device. Netflix’s playback-error instructions describe the error and network steps.

Black screen with sound
If you are using an HDMI adapter, dock, or external display, check those connections and whether the adapter supports the playback setup. This is a video-output branch, not simply a loading-screen problem. Netflix’s black-screen guidance covers supported Apple video adapters and related playback behavior.
When to stop troubleshooting and get help
If the device cannot run iOS 18 and the App Store will not offer a compatible Netflix version, further app and network fixes cannot overcome that software requirement. Use another supported device; on an eligible iPad, Safari may be an alternative, though it is not a full substitute for every app feature.
If only Netflix fails on this device after the steps above, contact Netflix Support. If several apps are also crashing or failing to open, contact Apple or the device maker. If Netflix fails on multiple devices only on one network, contact the internet provider.
Have these details ready so support can narrow it down: your iPhone or iPad model, exact iOS/iPadOS version, Netflix app version if visible, the precise error message or code, whether Netflix works in Safari or on another device, whether other devices on the same network are affected, and whether the issue began after an app or system update.
