Netflix India’s 2024 programming announcements brought together a scripted drama about the 1999 IC 814 hijacking, a documentary on the India–Pakistan cricket rivalry and Kapil Sharma’s comedy-variety show. They are no longer all upcoming: the first two have premiered, while The Great Indian Kapil Show has continued through renewals, with a fifth season included in Netflix’s 2026 India slate.
What Netflix announced—and what happened next
The three projects illustrate different kinds of programming rather than a single genre: historical drama, sports documentary and celebrity-led comedy. Their release status was not the same even when the announcements were grouped together. The Great Indian Kapil Show was already launching in March 2024; IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack was given an August 2024 premiere date; and The Greatest Rivalry: India vs Pakistan arrived in February 2025.
| Title | Format and subject | Release or update | Status |

| IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack | Six-episode scripted limited series about the 1999 Indian Airlines flight hijacking | Premiered August 29, 2024 | Released; Netflix’s title page lists the series and episodes (Netflix title page) |
| The Greatest Rivalry: India vs Pakistan | Documentary series on the history and significance of the cricket rivalry | Premiered February 7, 2025 | Released; Netflix described it as a global release (Netflix announcement) |
| The Great Indian Kapil Show | Comedy and celebrity-variety programme hosted by Kapil Sharma | Launched March 2024; fifth season included in Netflix’s February 2026 slate | Continuing franchise; Netflix announced the fifth season in its 2026 slate (Netflix’s 2026 India slate) |
IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack dramatizes a seven-day crisis
The hijacking did not happen in 1991. Indian Airlines Flight IC 814 was seized on December 24, 1999, after departing Kathmandu for New Delhi. The aircraft was diverted through several locations before the crisis ended in Kandahar, Afghanistan. The seven-day ordeal involved passengers and crew, negotiators, Indian officials and international diplomacy.
Netflix’s six-episode series is a scripted drama inspired by real events, not a documentary record. It is based on Flight Into Fear: A Captain’s Story, written by Captain Devi Sharan and Srinjoy Chowdhury. Anubhav Sinha directed and created the series; Matchbox Shots produced it in association with Benaras Mediaworks. Netflix announced its August 29, 2024 premiere in its release announcement and later outlined its adaptation and production details in a production feature.

The principal cast includes Vijay Varma, Patralekhaa, Pankaj Kapur, Naseeruddin Shah, Arvind Swami, Dia Mirza, Amrita Puri, Anupam Tripathi, Kumud Mishra and Manoj Pahwa. The subject combines a real hostage crisis with political and diplomatic decisions, so it is useful to distinguish the series’ dramatization from the historical record it draws on. Netflix’s Tudum explainer also identifies the event as the 1999 hijacking.
The Greatest Rivalry: India vs Pakistan is a documentary, not a match broadcast
The cricket title takes a historical and cultural approach to India–Pakistan cricket: the sport’s political context, emotional stakes, memorable matches and the players associated with the rivalry. Netflix announced a February 7, 2025 premiere in its release notice. Its official Media Center listing identifies the documentary series.

The announced participants included former players Virender Sehwag, Sourav Ganguly, Sunil Gavaskar, Ravichandran Ashwin, Shoaib Akhtar, Javed Miandad, Waqar Younis and Inzamam-ul-Haq. The premise is broader than any one fixture: it is a documentary examination of the rivalry, not live-match rights or coverage of a particular upcoming game.
The Great Indian Kapil Show became an ongoing Netflix franchise
Hosted by comedian Kapil Sharma, the show blends comedy, sketches, celebrity interviews, music and other entertainment segments. Netflix promoted its launch in March 2024 as a weekly, broad-audience programme. Early guests included Aamir Khan; Ranbir Kapoor and family; cricketers Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer; and Ed Sheeran. Netflix’s launch announcement introduced the format and trailer.

Netflix announced a second season on June 16, 2024. In that renewal announcement, the company said the first season ranked among its top two shows in India since launch and spent five weeks on the Global Top 10 Non-English TV list. Those are Netflix’s own platform-performance claims, not independently audited audience figures. The 2024 renewal is no longer the latest status: Netflix’s February 3, 2026 India slate included a fifth season.
Why these three titles made a notable mix
Taken together, the titles show Netflix India programming across three distinct audiences and formats: viewers drawn to a high-stakes real-event drama, cricket fans interested in the history behind a major sporting rivalry, and audiences looking for accessible comedy and celebrity conversation. That is an editorial reading of the group, not a claim that Netflix formally presented the three programmes as a single strategy.

The distinction matters for viewers choosing what to watch. IC 814 is a dramatized limited series about a specific crisis; The Greatest Rivalry is a sports documentary with a wider historical scope; and Kapil Sharma’s show is an entertainment variety format that continued beyond its original season.
