Netflix still works on Windows for online streaming, but the current Netflix app for Windows no longer supports downloading movies or episodes for offline playback. If the Downloads option has disappeared, Netflix says you are using the newer app and cannot return to the old download-capable version. For offline viewing, you must use a supported Android device, iPhone or iPad, Amazon Fire tablet, or compatible Chromebook instead.
What changed in the Netflix Windows app?
Netflix has replaced the older Windows app that supported offline downloads with a newer version focused on streaming. According to Netflix’s Windows app help page, the current app adds support for live events, improved streaming quality, and ad-supported plans—but removes downloads.
The change is therefore not the usual result of a corrupted cache, an outdated driver, insufficient disk space, or a temporary Netflix error. If the Downloads section is missing, Netflix identifies the app version itself as the reason. Its documentation also says there is no supported way to go back to the previous app.
Netflix’s separate error-code guidance is even more explicit: the Windows app no longer supports downloading titles for offline viewing. Netflix directs Windows users to install or continue using the new Microsoft Store version for streaming and to use another device for offline playback.

Netflix’s current documentation does not establish one universal cutoff date for every country, Windows edition, or subscription plan. Independent reporting associated the transition with 2024, but the important point for users now is the present capability: the download feature has been removed from the current Windows app.
What Windows users can still do
The loss of downloads does not end Netflix support on Windows. You can still watch online through:
- The current Netflix app obtained through the Microsoft Store.
- Netflix.com in a supported browser.
Netflix lists Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Opera among the supported browsers for Windows computers. Streaming quality depends on the browser, operating system, hardware, and Netflix plan. The Windows app may support up to Ultra HD on qualifying systems, but high-resolution streaming should not be confused with offline playback.
Microsoft’s Microsoft Store guidance continues to list Netflix as an available app. That distribution channel confirms where to obtain the current Windows client; it does not mean that the app still includes downloads.

Which devices still support Netflix downloads?
Netflix’s current offline-viewing instructions list four device categories:
- Android phones and tablets.
- iPhone and iPad.
- Amazon Fire tablets.
- Google Chromebooks with the Google Play Store installed.
Netflix requires the latest version of its app and warns that some older operating-system versions may not support downloads. Check the specific device’s operating system and app compatibility before buying hardware solely for Netflix travel viewing.
Android phone or tablet
An Android phone is the simplest replacement if portability matters. An Android tablet for Netflix downloads is more suitable when you want a larger screen without carrying a Windows laptop. Netflix’s support list applies to the device category, not automatically to every model, so confirm that the tablet can install the current Netflix app and runs a supported Android version.
iPhone or iPad
Netflix supports downloads on iPhone and iPad through its current app. An iPad for Netflix offline viewing provides a larger display for flights, hotel rooms, or locations with unreliable internet access. Keep the app and iPadOS current, and check for the Download icon on the particular title you want before traveling.
Amazon Fire tablet
An Amazon Fire tablet for Netflix can be a lower-cost dedicated screen for downloaded entertainment. Compatibility still depends on the tablet’s supported software and the current Netflix app. Do not assume that every old or discontinued Fire model will offer the same experience.
Chromebook with Google Play Store
A compatible Chromebook is the closest officially documented laptop-style alternative to a Windows PC for Netflix downloads. Netflix specifically requires a Chromebook with Google Play Store support, because downloads use the Android Netflix app rather than the old Windows download client.
That requirement matters when comparing Chromebooks. Verify that the exact model supports Google Play and Android apps before purchase. A Chromebook that cannot install the Google Play Store should not be treated as a guaranteed offline Netflix solution.

How to download Netflix titles on a supported device
- Install or update the Netflix app on the Android device, iPhone, iPad, Fire tablet, or compatible Chromebook.
- Sign in to the Netflix account and select the profile you will use.
- Open a movie or episode and look for the Download icon. If it is not present, that title may not be available for download.
- For a series, download individual episodes when the icon appears. On supported iPhone and iPad app versions, Netflix may also provide a season-download option.
- Prefer Wi-Fi for large downloads, particularly when using a metered mobile connection.
- Open the app’s Downloads area to find and play saved titles without an internet connection.
Netflix’s download instructions contain the current device and account rules. The exact labels can vary slightly by device and app version.

Downloads are useful for travel, but they are not permanent copies and do not remove Netflix’s licensing or account requirements.
- Not every title can be downloaded. A movie or episode must display the Download icon. Rights and title availability vary.
- Downloads can expire. A saved title may stop playing after the applicable period, and some titles have limits on how many times they can be downloaded in a year.
- You must remain signed in. Netflix says users need to stay signed in to access downloaded content offline.
- Downloads are tied to the downloading device. They can be watched from the Netflix profiles on that device, but they are not a general library that transfers freely to another device.
- Canceling membership removes downloads. If you cancel your Netflix account, downloads on the device are deleted. Restarting the membership does not automatically restore them; the titles must be downloaded again.
Download quotas by plan
Netflix’s current help page says that ad-free plans can have up to 100 active downloads per device, subject to the number of devices allowed by the plan. Ad-supported plans are limited to 15 total downloads per device per calendar month. These are policy limits rather than permanent technical guarantees, so check Netflix’s help center if your plan or app displays different restrictions. Can you reinstall the old Windows Netflix app?
Netflix does not provide an official rollback procedure. Its guidance says that users on the new app cannot return to the old version, and it does not publish a supported method for preserving Windows downloads after the transition.

That means downloading an older installer from an unofficial mirror, modifying the app package, blocking Microsoft Store updates, or attempting to bypass Netflix’s digital-rights protections is not a reliable or recommended solution. Such packages may be unsafe, may stop working when Netflix changes its service, and may violate Netflix’s terms or copyright protections.
Software that repairs registries, drivers, or general Windows performance also cannot restore a feature Netflix intentionally removed. If online Netflix playback is failing, that may be a separate troubleshooting problem; a missing Downloads option in the current app is not evidence that the PC needs a performance utility.
What to do before a flight or other offline trip
- Choose the replacement device first. Use an Android phone or tablet, iPhone or iPad, Amazon Fire tablet, or compatible Chromebook.
- Update the operating system and Netflix app. Older software may not support downloads.
- Check each title. Do not assume that everything available for streaming can be downloaded.
- Download over Wi-Fi. This avoids consuming mobile data and gives the app time to complete the transfer.
- Test the Downloads area before leaving. If practical, briefly open a downloaded title while connected, then confirm that it appears in the app’s Downloads section.
- Stay signed in. Signing out or changing account status can affect access to downloads.
- Plan for battery life. Travelers using a phone or tablet may also want a USB-C power bank for tablet, but a power bank does not change Netflix compatibility or extend a title’s expiration period.
