Netflix Category Codes: Browse Hard-to-Find Genres (2026)

Netflix category codes are shortcuts to genre and collection pages—not keys to an exclusive library. Open https://www.netflix.com/browse/genre/CODE in a browser, replacing CODE with a number such as 6839 for Documentaries. The page can make narrower collections easier to browse, but what you can watch still depends on your country, profile and plan.

What Netflix secret codes actually do

“Secret code” is the popular name for a numeric category ID. Entering one in Netflix’s browse URL takes you to a genre or collection page that may not be easy to reach through the home screen. That can be useful when you want to explore a type of documentary or another niche category rather than rely on personalized rows.

The code changes how you browse; it does not change your Netflix account’s catalog. It cannot bypass regional licensing, make a paid title free, defeat profile restrictions or guarantee that every title associated with a genre will appear. Netflix says availability and ratings can vary by region: Netflix’s regional availability and ratings guidance.

How to use a Netflix category code

1. Open a web browser on a computer or phone. The URL method is the dependable option; app and TV behavior varies.
2. Enter https://www.netflix.com/browse/genre/CODE, replacing CODE with the category number.
3. Sign in if Netflix prompts you, then check the page heading and browse the available titles.
4. To watch on a TV or in the app, search for a title you found by name, or use the browser on a supported screen.

For example, open the Documentary category with code 6839. To browse anime, use code 7424. A successful page shows the category’s current results for the signed-in account and active profile.

These commonly listed category IDs are practical starting points, not a promise that every category is populated in every country or will remain unchanged. Netflix does not publish a complete public master list of codes. Third-party code references include What’s on Netflix’s category index and Netflix-Codes’ searchable directory.

Narrower codes for targeted browsing

A specific code can be a quicker route to a subgenre, but narrow collections are more likely to return few or no results in a particular region or profile.

These IDs are drawn from third-party code references, including Netflix-Codes. Treat them as examples rather than a complete or permanent taxonomy; category names and results can change.

Why a category may show few or no titles

• Regional catalog differences: Netflix libraries vary by country and licensing. A category page cannot make a title available where Netflix does not offer it.
• Profile maturity settings: A Kids profile or a profile with a maturity limit may omit titles. Netflix explains how profile maturity settings and blocked titles affect what appears.
• Plan restrictions: On an ad-supported plan, some titles may appear with a lock because of licensing limits. See Netflix’s explanation of locked titles on ad-supported plans.
• Stale or empty category: Netflix can change, merge or retire collections, and a very narrow category may have no current titles for your account. Third-party directories also note that codes can stop working; see Netflix Genre Codes.
• Classification differences: Categories are not exhaustive labels. A title may fit a genre in your view but not be assigned to that particular Netflix collection.
• Sign-in or session issue: A visitor may be sent to sign-in or sign-up rather than see the full collection. A category code does not provide viewing without an eligible membership.

How to troubleshoot a code

1. Check that the address uses /browse/genre/ and contains only the code after the final slash.
2. Sign in to Netflix, then reload the category page.
3. Try a broad category such as Documentaries (6839), Anime (7424) or Horror Movies (8711) to see whether the issue is limited to one narrow code.
4. If authorized, switch from a Kids or restricted profile to a profile with the appropriate maturity settings.
5. Search Netflix by the category name or a specific title. If the title itself is unavailable, the category code cannot change that.
6. If broad categories work but one narrow code does not, treat that code as possibly outdated or unpopulated rather than evidence that the entire genre has disappeared.

Do category codes work in the Netflix app or on a TV?

The direct URL is designed for a browser. Some versions of Netflix search may respond to a numeric code, but Netflix does not consistently document that behavior across phones, TVs, consoles and app versions. For a reliable workflow, open the category in a browser, note titles of interest, then search for those titles in the app or on the TV.

What category codes cannot unlock

• Unavailable regional titles: The code does not override country-specific rights or licensing.
• Parental restrictions: It does not bypass maturity settings or blocked-title controls.
• Plan-locked playback: A title shown in a category may still be locked under the account’s plan.
• Free viewing or exclusive access: A code is not a password, promotion or Netflix Originals pass. It only points to a browse page for content available under the account’s usual rules.

Make useful categories easy to revisit

• Bookmark category URLs you use often, such as the Documentary or Anime pages.
• Add worthwhile titles to My List so you can find them again without relying on the category.
• If you keep a personal code list, note when you checked it and which country/profile you used; results can vary.

For a single known title, an ordinary Netflix search is generally faster. Category codes are most useful when you know the kind of film or series you want but want Netflix to show a broader collection.
