Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly asked Israel’s attorney general, military chief of staff and Shin Bet head to identify people involved in the documentary NAZA and called for them to be investigated and prosecuted. Reporting on 12 October 2026 described a demand—not a completed legal action—and does not establish that anyone has been identified, charged or prosecuted.

What Netanyahu reportedly demanded

The Guardian and Al Jazeera reported on 12 October 2026 that Netanyahu called for a comprehensive investigation into people involved in or appearing in NAZA. The reported grounds included alleged information-security offenses, criminal defamation, and harm to Israel’s diplomatic and security interests. The Guardian reported that he directed his request to the attorney general, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) chief of staff and the head of Shin Bet.

Al Jazeera reported Netanyahu’s characterization of the film as presenting “a false, misleading, and biased narrative that defames the State of Israel and the [Israeli military] internationally, severely damaging Israel’s standing.” That is his stated position, not a legal finding about the film or its interviewees.

What NAZA is about

NAZA is a documentary directed by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor and produced by The Guardian. Reports describe 24 anonymous Israeli military and intelligence interviewees discussing targeting systems and civilian harm in Gaza. The film’s title uses “NAZA” as an acronym associated with collateral damage; The Washington Post reported that interviewees used the term for anticipated civilian casualties in strike planning.

#1 Best Overall

The Washington Post described a disputed account in the film concerning a strike allegedly approved with 500 expected civilian deaths. That number is part of the film’s account, not an established casualty figure or independently verified event; the military denied that such a strike, or anything close to it, occurred. The film received the Venice International Film Festival Special Jury Prize, and Euronews reported its runtime as 80 minutes.

What the film’s producers and the IDF say

The production’s account of its reporting

A Guardian spokesperson said the production assessed testimony against leaked classified documents, detailed verification of specific strikes and corroboration from confidential sources who do not appear on camera. The spokesperson also said the team interviewed more than 100 people familiar with IDF systems over three years. Those are the producer’s descriptions of its methods, not an independent audit establishing the accuracy of every allegation.

The Washington Post reported that co-director Yuval Abraham explained the interviewees’ anonymity by saying, “This film would not have been made in any other way.” The sources reviewed do not establish the identities of the interviewees.

The military’s response

In an official response dated 11 September 2026, the IDF said: “The IDF categorically rejects these allegations.” It argued that anonymous accounts cannot be verified, that some interviewees may not have served in or held the roles attributed to them, and that some claims are contradictory or misuse legal terms. The IDF also said human personnel make strike-selection and approval decisions under its guidelines, and that soldiers must report suspected legal violations.

The film’s producers describe testimony supported by additional reporting and verification; the IDF challenges the sources and allegations while describing its own procedures. These competing accounts do not resolve what happened in any particular strike. That would require a claim-by-claim investigation, and the sources reviewed do not report a legal finding that settles the film’s underlying allegations.

What is established about legal proceedings?

The reports establish that Netanyahu called for identification, investigation and prosecution. They do not establish that charges were filed, that the interviewees were identified, or that a prosecution began. A call for authorities to investigate is not the same as a decision by prosecutors or a court finding guilt.

The Guardian and Al Jazeera reports on Netanyahu’s demand were published on 12 October 2026; the IDF response cited above was dated 11 September. The material available in those reports does not establish any subsequent procedural development. The film’s allegations and the military’s denial should therefore be read as contested claims, not as adjudicated facts.
