Neil Young and the Chrome Hearts’ “Let’s Roll Again” urges American automakers to build cleaner, safer cars—and takes a pointed swipe at Elon Musk and Tesla along the way. The song appears fifth on the band’s 2025 album Talkin to the Trees.

What “Let’s Roll Again” is about

The song’s central appeal is directed at U.S. car companies: make cars that are better for people and the environment. Its attack on Tesla is part of that argument, rather than the whole subject. Exclaim! and Stereogum both describe the track as a call for American automakers to make better cars, while noting its jab at Musk and Tesla. Exclaim! Stereogum

Exclaim! reports that the song interpolates Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land,” bringing a familiar American folk reference into its appeal to domestic automakers. One reproduced lyric reads, “If you’re a fascist, then get a Tesla / If it’s electric, it doesn’t matter.” That line makes the criticism explicit: the song rejects the idea that an electric car is automatically beyond criticism. The lyric is reported by both publications; this article quotes only that excerpt.

Where it fits on Talkin to the Trees

“Let’s Roll Again” is track five on Talkin to the Trees, Neil Young and the Chrome Hearts’ ten-song album. Exclaim!’s May 2, 2025 announcement said the album was scheduled for June 13, 2025, through The Other Shoe Productions and Reprise Records. Its track list also includes “Family Life,” “Dark Mirage,” “First Fire of Winter,” “Silver Eagle,” “Big Change,” “Talkin to the Trees,” “Movin Ahead,” “Bottle of Love” and “Thankful.” Exclaim!’s album announcement and track list

It is not a direct sequel to Young’s 2002 “Let’s Roll”

Despite the shared title phrase, Stereogum cautions that “Let’s Roll Again” is not a direct sequel to Young’s 2002 song “Let’s Roll.” The newer song’s subject, as described in the coverage, is automakers and the cars they build—not a continuation of the earlier track’s story. Stereogum’s report

Reports disagree on when the band first played it

The first-performance timing is unresolved in the available reports. Exclaim! says the band debuted the track in January. A May 2, 2025 post by Thrasher’s Wheat, reproducing a statement attributed to Neil Young Archives, says the band debuted it the week before at the Light Up the Blues concert. Neither account explains the discrepancy, so it is not possible to identify a definitive first-debut date from these reports. Thrasher’s Wheat also reproduces the brief statement, “We must stand together,” attributed to Young. Thrasher’s Wheat
