In January 2025, he also expressed regret for being emotionally unavailable and careless with people’s feelings, while saying that was not an admission to abuse. Later U.S. lawsuits were dismissed on procedural grounds, including because courts concluded New Zealand was the more appropriate forum. Those dismissals did not decide whether the allegations were true.
What did Neil Gaiman say about the allegations?
In a January 14, 2025 post titled “Breaking the Silence,” Gaiman denied having engaged in non-consensual sexual activity and said he did not accept that there had been abuse. He wrote that some accounts did not happen or were distorted. He also acknowledged personal shortcomings in his relationships, saying, “I was obviously careless with people’s hearts and feelings, and that’s something that I really, deeply regret.”
Gaiman’s expression of regret was about his conduct toward people’s feelings; it was not an admission to the alleged assaults. His categorical denial was: “I’m far from a perfect person, but I have never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity with anyone. Ever.”
On February 2, 2026, he posted again, calling the allegations “completely and simply untrue.” He also asserted that emails, text messages and video evidence flatly contradicted them. That post records Gaiman’s claim about the evidence; it does not independently verify what the materials show.

What allegations were reported?
Tortoise Media’s 2024 reporting
A 2024 Tortoise Media podcast investigation described allegations by two former partners and a police complaint in New Zealand. The podcast also summarized Gaiman’s account as strongly denying non-consensual sex. These are the outlet’s reported accounts, not findings by police or a court.
New York Magazine’s 2025 feature
A January 2025 New York Magazine feature presented allegations by eight women. Associated Press coverage noted that four of those women’s allegations had already been broadcast in the Tortoise podcast. These reports describe allegations; the number of women featured is not a judicial finding that the claims were established.
Gaiman’s January 14 post came in response to this newer round of reporting. The distinction matters: media reports document what people alleged and what Gaiman said in response, while neither a report nor a denial by itself resolves the underlying claims.
What happened to the U.S. lawsuits?
The Wisconsin case
In Pavlovich v. Gaiman, Scarlett Pavlovich alleged that Gaiman sexually assaulted her while she worked as a nanny in New Zealand in 2022. Gaiman denied her allegations and sought dismissal on procedural grounds. On October 3, 2025, the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin dismissed the case without prejudice, concluding that New Zealand was the more appropriate forum.

The judge expressly limited what the ruling decided: “the issue before the court is not whether Pavlovich’s allegations are true.” The court said it accepted the allegations as true for the purpose of its procedural analysis, not as a finding on their truth. It also did not consider text messages submitted by Gaiman because they were irrelevant to the forum motion.
“Without prejudice” means the dismissal was not a final decision on the merits of the allegations. The opinion said that if Pavlovich sued Gaiman in New Zealand and he refused service there, she could seek to reopen the Wisconsin case. The available reporting does not establish what later happened in New Zealand.
Other U.S. actions
In February 2026, the Associated Press reported that three U.S. lawsuits connected to the nanny allegations had been dismissed. AP described the Wisconsin and Massachusetts dismissals as based on the conclusion that the claims should be pursued in New Zealand. It also reported that an action in New York against Amanda Palmer had earlier been voluntarily dismissed.
These procedural outcomes are not trial verdicts or findings that the allegations were true or false. In particular, a decision that a dispute belongs in another forum answers where a case may proceed, not what happened.

Did a court clear Gaiman?
The Wisconsin court did not clear Gaiman of the allegations or find that they were true. It dismissed Pavlovich’s case without prejudice because it considered New Zealand the more appropriate forum, and it explicitly said it was not deciding the truth of her allegations. AP’s account of the other U.S. dismissals likewise describes procedural outcomes, not merits rulings.
What publishing changes were reported?
Publishers Weekly reported in January 2025 that HarperCollins had no new Gaiman books scheduled, W. W. Norton would have no projects with him going forward, and Marvel had no books in the works with him. The trade publication also reported that Dark Horse Comics would stop publishing his works and that the Anansi Boys comic series and collected volume were canceled. Dark Horse said: “Dark Horse takes seriously the allegations against Neil Gaiman and we are no longer publishing his works.”
Those were statements and plans reported at that time. They do not establish the complete current status of every contract, project or publisher relationship.
