The 2026 festival is scheduled for October 23–31, with the Grand Parade set for Saturday, October 31, at 11 a.m. downtown. The headline’s “best” is an editorial description, not an official ranking: the organizer calls Neewollah the state’s largest annual festival, but no comparative ranking methodology is provided.
What is Neewollah?
Neewollah is a community festival held each fall in Independence, Kansas. Its name reverses the spelling of Halloween, and its origins are tied directly to the holiday. The Neewollah Festival organization says the event began in 1919 to provide positive activities for children in place of Halloween pranks. Early celebrations featured October 31 parades with decorated cars and carriages, and residents chose Queen Neelah through penny votes. The organizer’s history and overview describe the festival’s beginnings and current activities.
That origin does not mean today’s program is only for children. The current overview includes parades, performances, food, a carnival, a band competition and a fun run, making it a broad community celebration as well as a Halloween-season tradition.
How did the festival grow?
The celebration was interrupted during the Great Depression and World War II. In 1958, four businessmen revived it as a three-day event. It has since expanded into a nine-day festival. The Kansas Historical Society’s Kansas Memory record also traces the festival from its 1919 beginnings through its interruptions and growth from a one-day celebration to a nine-day event.
