You can guide, disguise or work with it, but styling won’t permanently change its growth pattern. The most useful starting point is to dampen the section and shape it while blow-drying, then choose a cut and part that suit where the cowlick sits.
Why cowlicks resist styling
A cowlick may look like a swirl, split, bump or upturned patch. It is a natural growth pattern, not a styling mistake, and can occur with any hair type. The direction can become most visible when hair is cut or dried in a way that works against it. Hair.com’s interview with Redken Artist Jamie McDaniel describes cowlicks as “gifted to us from birth”; treat that as a stylist’s colorful phrasing, not a detailed scientific account of their cause. Hair.com’s guide to cowlicks and Healthline’s styling overview describe the pattern and its common appearances.
Location shapes the solution. Cowlicks often appear at the crown or front hairline, but can also occur at the nape or sides. A method that helps a front fringe may not suit a crown swirl or a nape that sticks out.
How to style a cowlick while blow-drying
- Start with wet or damp hair. If the section has dried in its usual direction, wet it again; working on dry roots is less useful for resetting their appearance.
- Use a fine-tooth comb to guide the roots. While blow-drying, direct the unruly section against the direction it naturally wants to go, then shape it toward the finish you want. Associated Hair Professionals recommends beginning against the cowlick’s direction; the final direction depends on the cut and style. Associated Hair Professionals’ cowlick styling advice covers the technique.
- Use product only if the style needs it. McDaniel recommends a targeted root spray with the comb-and-dryer method. Other stylists cited by Healthline mention pre-styling products and different hold products depending on hair length. These are options, not a universal prescription; choose for your hair and finish.
Hair.com names Redken Root Lifter Volumizing Spray as one option. Product formulas and availability can change, so check current details if you are considering it. A dryer and comb support the technique; the sources do not establish that any particular dryer model is required.

Choose a cut for the cowlick’s location
There is no single best haircut for every cowlick. Before changing length, ask your stylist or barber to look at how the section grows and explain how much daily styling you want to do.
| What you want to address | Approach to discuss | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Crown or other area that flips up | Keeping more length may add weight; a textured or deliberately tousled finish can make the direction less conspicuous. | Length and weight help some styles, but not every cut or texture responds the same way. |
| Front hairline beneath bangs or fringe | Plan to restyle the section as part of the fringe. | A fringe over a hairline cowlick may need daily attention. |
| Area that suits a short cut | Ask whether the cut can remove the affected section or incorporate its direction. | A very short cut may expose the pattern rather than hide it, depending on its location and the look you want. |
| Nape | Discuss a shape that accommodates the growth direction; a close nape can be an option for some cuts. | A nape cut close to the skin may need regular cleanup. |
| Any location where you want a softer finish | Consider natural texture, a piecey cut or a deliberately tousled style. | A smoother finish may require more controlled blow-drying. |
Try a different part or work with the pattern
For a front or crown flip, changing the part may add weight over the cowlick. Hairstylist Garren suggested a low part on the opposite side for certain cowlicks in an Allure advice column. That is a specific stylist’s suggestion, not a rule for every head. Garren’s broader advice was: “Almost every model I know has a cowlick—it’s better to work around it than fight it.” This is his opinion and anecdotal observation, not a prevalence statistic.

Working with the natural direction is also a valid choice. A stylist can shape the surrounding hair to blend with it, while texture or a tousled finish can make a split or flip less prominent. The best option depends on location, hair texture, desired length and how much upkeep you prefer.

A cowlick can expose some scalp, but styling guidance alone cannot determine whether a new or changing scalp gap is a cowlick or hair loss. If the area is new or changing, do not assume a styling explanation; seek an appropriate professional assessment. No haircut or product permanently alters the underlying direction in which that hair grows.
