Yes, if you want Tony and Ziva back on screen in a story that drops the case-of-the-week format for a continuing international spy plot. Know the limit going in: Paramount+ canceled NCIS: Tony & Ziva after one 10-episode season, a decision TVLine reported on December 19, 2025. The series is a bold structural bet, and its appeal rests almost entirely on whether the two leads still work together on screen.
What the series is
Paramount Global Content lists NCIS: Tony & Ziva as a drama with a first season of 10 episodes, premiering September 4, 2025. It picks up after the parent series. Tony DiNozzo left NCIS after Ziva’s supposed death to raise their daughter, Tali. Ziva was later found alive, completed one final NCIS mission, and reunited with Tony and Tali in Paris. The new show sends the family on the run across Europe while they try to identify who is targeting them and rebuild trust.

The official Paramount listing names Cote de Pablo as Ziva David and Michael Weatherly as Tony DiNozzo. The supporting ensemble includes Amita Suman, Maximilian Osinski, Lara Rossi, Isla Gie, Nassima Benchicou, Julian Ovenden, Terence Maynard, and James D’Arcy. CBS Studios produced the series, and John McNamara, de Pablo, and Weatherly are among its executive producers.
The format gamble: from procedural to serialized espionage
The central question is whether the series can change genres without losing what made its leads appealing. McNamara made the intent explicit at launch. In a Daily Beast interview by Megan Vick published September 4, 2025, he said: “We agreed that it wasn’t going to be a procedural, and it was going to shoot in Europe.” The show is therefore built around a single running threat rather than a murder that is solved each week.

Pacing and plot cohesion
A procedural can reset every episode. A serialized thriller has to carry clues, betrayals, and reversals from one hour to the next. That raises the standard for plot logic. Viewers who value the parent show’s weekly closure should expect a looser, more demanding structure, with fewer self-contained episodes to fall back on.
Whether the action leaves room for the relationship
Spy plots tend to consume screen time. The format gamble only pays off if the chase, the locations, and the set pieces give the characters enough quiet space to talk through what happened to them. The series’ design makes that tension the main thing to watch.
Chemistry against character change
The emotional draw is the reunion itself, but the premise does not promise a return to their earlier dynamic. Tony is now a father and head of a security company. Ziva’s return reopens trust issues and power struggles, and the story’s stakes are built on what each of them has kept from the other.
Rank #2
- Michael Weatherly, Cote de Pablo, Amita Suman
McNamara described parenthood as changing the “shenanigans” available to the pair. Weatherly discussed Tony’s insecurity about what Ziva has not told him. Those are the intended character stakes, and they make the show a test of whether the leads can be adults with history rather than playing the flirtation of the earlier years.
Whether the chemistry actually lands is a critical judgment, and marketing copy cannot settle it. Judge it by the scenes themselves: whether the co-parenting beats feel earned, whether trust is rebuilt or merely postponed, and whether Tony’s maturity holds under pressure.
Is it a usable entry point for newcomers?
The opening recap is designed to catch new viewers up on the premise. Its job is to explain why Tony and Ziva are separated, why Ziva was presumed dead, and how the family came to Paris. That is enough to follow the spy plot on its own terms.

The emotional weight, however, depends on years of history built on the parent series. A viewer who has never watched NCIS can follow the chase but may miss the significance of certain reunions and grievances. Newcomers should treat the recap as an orientation, not a substitute for the earlier seasons.

Cote de Pablo has said that she imagined a wedding image after seeing a cliffside Italian villa on Pinterest, then suggested a fake-wedding situation for the story. The scene is not Tony and Ziva getting married. Ziva’s wedding dress is part of a sting operation in which Boris plays the groom.

In a CinemaBlend interview by Adam Holmes published September 10, 2025, McNamara praised the pitch as “one of the best pitches I’ve ever heard from an opening.” That is McNamara’s own assessment of the idea, not a critical consensus.
Critical reception
Rotten Tomatoes listed NCIS: Tony & Ziva at 82% in a search-result snapshot of the title page, based on 11 critic reviews. That figure reflects the page at the time the snapshot was taken and will change as reviews are added or revised. Treat it as an early critical read, not a final verdict.

Cancellation and the ending
Andy Swift reported for TVLine on December 19, 2025 that Paramount+ canceled the series after one season. The report included a joint statement from Weatherly and de Pablo, who thanked the people who made the show and the fans who followed it. No first-party cancellation notice is cited here, and reporting available to us does not establish the reasons for the decision, so none are offered.
The season’s last episode is titled “Full Circle.” Because the show was canceled, the ending should be read as the close of the only season produced, not as a planned final chapter. Closure-focused viewers should weigh that before committing.
