Tony and Ziva fly to Austria to rescue Jonah, but the prison break turns into a trap: Jonah is working with Martine, and Henry pays for the escape with his life. The episode’s sharpest counterpoint is a couples-therapy flashback that shows how Tony’s jokes can keep him from saying what he really feels.
What happens in “NCIS: Tony & Ziva” Episode 5?
Released on Paramount+ on September 4, 2025, Episode 5 begins with Jonah in prison discussing escape with Dejan. Tony, Ziva, and their team set out to get him out, stealing Martine’s plane and flying to Austria. Ziva gets into the prison’s security environment disguised as a trucker and helps the team gain remote access, while Tony approaches Jonah under a cover identity.
The rescue collapses when Tony and Ziva discover Jonah is not merely a prisoner in need of help. He is working with Martine, and the danger surrounding the couple is part of their plan. The reversal recasts the operation: Tony and Ziva have not reached a captive ally so much as walked into a carefully arranged trap.
How Jonah and Martine turn the prison break into a trap
Jonah and Martine capture Tony and Ziva, then use the prison chaos to advance their plan. They retrieve the 9.4 USB drive, reveal their relationship, and recruit Dejan, who built the firewall protecting the Reigning Fire drone. The pair’s strategy depends on disorder: prisoners are freed, alliances shift, and the operation becomes harder to control.

Tony’s allies work out that his shouted clue means “Remove All Tags,” helping Tony and Ziva make their escape amid the confusion. Henry joins them, and for a moment appears to be earning Tony’s trust again. But the apparent escape is not a clean victory. A drone strike distracts Henry, giving Jonah an opening to take a weapon and shoot him.
Henry’s death lands as both a personal betrayal and a plot turn. Tony has only just begun to trust him again, and now Jonah’s violence leaves no time for a reckoning: Tony and Ziva receive a voicemail from Tali saying that strange men are nearby before the message cuts off. They drive toward her rather than staying behind.

Why the couples-therapy flashback matters
The flashback takes Tony and Ziva back to couples therapy after their engagement. Ziva describes the hurt of Tony’s emotional absence and his habit of answering difficult moments with wisecracks. Tony initially responds in character, using humor to deflect. When he says Ziva has never hurt him, the therapist challenges the answer as dishonest and presses him to be vulnerable.
That scene gives the episode a character-focused thread amid the espionage mechanics. Tony’s jokes are not simply comic relief; they can function as a performance of confidence that prevents honest intimacy. The flashback also sharpens the stakes of the present-day partnership: escaping danger together is one thing, but a durable relationship requires Tony to let Ziva see what he would rather cover up.

Does the episode balance character and espionage?
Collider’s review praises the escalating plot and Julian Ovenden’s work as Jonah, whose shift from rescue target to active villain gives the episode its central jolt. It also notes that the espionage can feel convoluted and bulky. That tension is evident in an episode juggling the 9.4 drive, Dejan’s firewall, a prison uprising, a drone attack, and the threat to Tali. The moving parts create momentum, but the emotional story is easier to follow: Jonah’s betrayal costs Tony a friend, while Tony’s old habit of hiding behind humor remains a problem between him and Ziva.
The principal cast in the episode includes Michael Weatherly as Tony DiNozzo, Cote de Pablo as Ziva David, Julian Ovenden as Jonah, Nassima Benchicou as Martine, James D’Arcy as Henry, and Velibor Topić as Dejan.
