The episode does not prove that Knight fixes a universally agreed-upon flaw in the series; its more persuasive achievement is showing how a character-led decision can give a familiar case clear stakes and forward momentum.

The missing agent is Nick Torres, who has disappeared while working undercover on a cartel case. Knight, now in California after accepting a new job, is drawn back into the investigation with her former team leader, Alden Parker. Her suspicion that a priest is connected to the cartel leads her into the hostage crisis. The team eventually catches the perpetrator, rescues Torres and clears Knight’s name. She then turns down another California promotion and returns to the D.C. team, as TheWrap’s premiere coverage reports.
Why Knight’s return works
The episode’s strongest choice is making Knight’s return an active decision rather than a convenient reversal. Her California job is not simply taken away: after a few months, she has a chance to advance there, yet chooses the field work and relationships she wants in D.C. That gives the premiere a character resolution alongside its rescue operation.
#1 Best Overall
Katrina Law described Knight to TheWrap as someone who thrives on field work, despite its stress and toll. “Ultimately, it’s things like this that brought her back to D.C.,” Law said, explaining that Knight likes California and her new React agents but is “an adrenaline junkie” who loves being a field agent. The actor’s explanation supports the episode’s central idea: Knight is learning to choose a life that fits her, not just the career path others might consider the obvious next step.
That focus is a meaningful answer to the title’s “biggest problem” claim, but it is an argument about this episode, not a documented consensus about the franchise. “Empty Nest” feels more purposeful because Knight’s personal choice shapes how the procedural unfolds. The familiar mechanics—missing agent, investigation, hostage threat, rescue—have a clear emotional through-line instead of functioning as a standalone case detached from the previous season’s cliffhanger.

How the case serves the returning team
Knight and Parker
Parker bridges Knight’s California chapter and the team she left behind. Their connection to the case gives the episode a practical way to bring her back into the old group without pretending the months away never happened. The premiere uses that link to move the investigation forward while keeping Knight’s choice at the center.
Torres and the hostage stakes
Torres’s disappearance makes the case personal to the team, while the hostage situation supplies immediate danger. Those stakes give Knight a consequential role in the field and connect her return to the work she says she misses. The episode resolves the immediate crisis by rescuing Torres and apprehending the perpetrator.

Kasie and continuity
Law told TV Insider that Knight and Kasie stayed in frequent contact while Knight was away. It is a small but useful continuity detail: Knight’s return does not have to begin from a complete emotional blank slate with every former colleague.
Knight and Jimmy Palmer are not back together yet
Knight’s return to the team does not resolve her breakup with Jimmy Palmer. Law told TV Insider that the two still have loss and issues to work through, and previewed an awkward conversation in episode four. That is a later-season interview preview, not a scene or outcome in “Empty Nest.” The premiere leaves the relationship unresolved rather than using Knight’s return as a shortcut to reconciliation.

Verdict: a character-led reset, not a reinvention
“Empty Nest” succeeds most clearly at paying off Knight’s career cliffhanger: it brings her back through a case that needs her skills, then lets her choose the team and work she wants. The procedural plot is familiar, but Knight’s decision gives it a stronger reason to matter. The premiere does not establish that the whole series has fixed a single longstanding problem; it does make a convincing case that NCIS benefits when its team dynamics and an individual character’s growth drive the same story.
Where to watch
CBS’s U.S. episode listing says a Paramount+ subscription is required to stream “Empty Nest.” That statement applies to U.S. availability; it should not be read as a guide to streaming options in other countries. Check CBS’s official episode page for its listing.
