McGee follows LaRoche—and is left with a story no one can verify
The episode opens with McGee dreaming about Gibbs at his former boss’s house. Awake, McGee is still consumed by his effort to connect LaRoche to the Nexus cartel. He stays late reviewing evidence and brushes off colleagues who tell him to rest, a fixation that is already cutting into his life outside work.
When McGee sees LaRoche end an angry phone call, he drops plans to have lunch with Delilah and follows him. At a warehouse, McGee says he sees LaRoche shoot a man. McGee is then struck by a truck while chasing him and suffers a concussion. There is no body or immediate physical evidence to back up what he says happened, leaving the team—and Director Vance—uncertain whether to trust his account.

The van robbery gives the team a lead
The case begins with a birthday-party van robbery. The thieves used a military signal jammer to disable the van’s alarm, directing the team toward armored-car robbers Crispin Shaker Jr. and Jason Meeks.
As the investigation develops, the team connects Meeks to the man McGee says LaRoche shot. A partial fingerprint links LaRoche to Meeks, while text messages suggest the thieves were waiting for LaRoche to make a trade. The evidence shifts the team’s view of the robbery: they come to believe LaRoche used the thieves and the stolen property as part of a plan to disappear and cover his tracks.

LaRoche’s complaint turns the investigation on McGee
LaRoche files a complaint, prompting Inspector General Regina Ward to investigate McGee for misconduct, harassment, and abuse of power. Ward concludes that McGee’s actions appear driven by professional jealousy and suspends him indefinitely.
Before Ward and Vance return to the interrogation room, McGee has left custody. The team denies helping him get out. Vance recognizes the note McGee leaves—“Rule 45”—as “Clean up your own mess.” His departure turns the suspension into a more immediate crisis: McGee is now pursuing LaRoche without his colleagues’ authority or support.

The church standoff ends with a new mystery
The team finds evidence tying LaRoche to the stolen weapon and tracks him to an abandoned church. McGee is already there. In the ensuing standoff among McGee, LaRoche, and Shaker, LaRoche shoots Shaker.
The rest of the team arrives. LaRoche insists the situation is not about money and says they need to know the truth, but the episode ends before he explains what that means. His apparent connection to the robbery and his decision to shoot Shaker deepen the mystery rather than resolve whether LaRoche is an ally or an antagonist.

Knight and Torres face an unexpected marriage
In a lighter subplot, Knight and Torres learn that their undercover wedding has resulted in an official legal marriage. They weigh the financial benefits against the possibility that one of them would have to transfer off the team, and consider seeking an annulment. The episode leaves that decision open, alongside the central LaRoche cliffhanger.
