What happens in “Blue Bayou”
Gibbs faces Christmas without his family
The present-day story finds Leroy Jethro Gibbs preparing for his first Christmas without his wife and daughter. CBS’s official synopsis frames the episode around that loss and the flashbacks that reveal the unlikely path to his first day as a special agent.
Flashbacks trace the road from grief to NIS
The flashbacks show Gibbs struggling with the aftermath of killing Pedro Hernandez. TheWrap describes Ruth as helping draw him out of that darkness. The episode’s origin story is not a straightforward career ladder: it connects a period of grief and isolation to the personal encouragement that makes Gibbs consider law enforcement.
Ruth becomes an unexpected source of direction
Ruth, Gibbs’s landlady, grows close to him after his return from Mexico. Their friendship takes shape through ordinary companionship, including beers and jigsaw puzzles, as reported in TVLine’s ending recap.
