The finale’s cliffhanger was Maggie Shaw’s ominous return to Jane Tennant’s life—not a confirmed promise that Jane would appear in another NCIS series. Rocky Carroll later floated that possibility in an interview, but he did not announce a casting plan. The distinction matters: NCIS: Hawai’i was canceled before its May 6, 2024 finale aired, and the unresolved ending had been filmed before that decision.
What happens in the Season 3 finale?
In “Divided We Conquer,” the team resolves the immediate Compound X emergency. Sam Hanna is exposed while trying to reach the ELITE team, but Dr. Carla Chase develops an antidote and Sam recovers.

The episode’s final turn is personal. Jane returns home to find Maggie Shaw, her former mentor, waiting. Maggie says Jane’s daughter is not there, then warns Jane, “you’re probably going to need a drink for what’s coming next.” The episode ends without explaining what Maggie means.
Contemporaneous coverage raised possible links to Jane’s mother, Jane and Maggie’s CIA past, or a new threat. Those were possibilities, not answers supplied by the finale.

Was Jane Tennant’s return to the NCIS universe confirmed?
No. In a TV Insider cancellation interview, NCIS actor Rocky Carroll said, “So who’s to say that Vanessa Lachey’s character wouldn’t show up somewhere in the NCIS universe again?” He pointed to LL COOL J’s move from NCIS: Los Angeles to NCIS: Hawai’i as an example of a character crossing between shows.
Carroll’s wording was conditional. The interview did not announce a Jane Tennant guest appearance, a casting agreement, or a schedule. It was a possibility he raised, not a confirmed return.

Why did the series end on a cliffhanger?
CBS announced the cancellation before the finale’s broadcast, but the episode had already been filmed. TVLine reported that production had wrapped three weeks before CBS announced the decision. The story was written as a season-ending setup; after the cancellation, it became the series ending.
In a July 26, 2024 TV Insider report, co-showrunners Jan Nash, Christopher Silber, and Matt Bosack said: “If we’d known it was coming, we probably wouldn’t have ended the series on a cliffhanger.”

What might Season 4 have explored?
The co-showrunners said the Maggie storyline would eventually have intersected with Jane’s mother and returned to Jane’s CIA past. They also had possible developments in mind for Kate and Lucy, including a wedding or a meeting with family, though those ideas were not settled plans. They hoped to keep Sam Hanna around, too.
These were unrealized creative intentions, not episodes in production or confirmed plans for another NCIS series. With the show canceled, the finale leaves Maggie’s warning—and the paths the writers described—unresolved.
