National Geographic’s three-part docuseries Chilean Mine Rescue: Race Against Time tells the story of the 33 miners trapped by the 2010 San José Mine collapse in Chile. The announced U.S. premiere was September 25, 2026, on National Geographic, with the episodes scheduled to stream on Disney+ and Hulu the following day.
What is the new National Geographic series about?
Chilean Mine Rescue: Race Against Time is a three-part production from Blast Films about the collapse, the effort to reach the miners, and their rescue. National Geographic says it includes cell-phone footage filmed underground and interviews with survivors, family members, and rescuers. Some interviewees, according to the announcement, are speaking publicly outside local Chilean press for the first time.
The official episode listing describes a progression from the search after the men are trapped, to the moment rescuers make contact while obstacles remain, and finally to preparations for the rescue. The episodes are:

What happened to the 33 miners?
On August 5, 2010, a section of Chile’s San José copper-gold mine collapsed, trapping 33 miners about 2,300 feet below the Atacama Desert. Rescuers confirmed that the men had survived 17 days after the collapse. They reached the surface alive 69 days after the accident.

The National Geographic announcement says more than one billion people watched the rescue capsule emerge. That figure is the distributor’s estimate, not an independently verified audience count.
What role did NASA play in the rescue?
Chile led the rescue. At the Chilean government’s request, NASA provided technical advice; a NASA team was at the mine from August 30 through September 5, 2010. Its support addressed medical care, nutrition, psychological support, and engineering requirements for the Chilean rescue capsule. NASA’s involvement should not be mistaken for leading the operation.

How did rescuers support the miners and their families?
A September 25, 2026 National Geographic report by Angela Posada-Swafford describes Chilean psychologist Alberto Iturra and NASA psychologist Albert Holland supporting both the miners and their families. The account emphasizes that the crisis involved more than the isolated men underground: communication, family needs, and the decisions of managers on the surface were connected.
Reported approaches included coordinating communication, meeting daily with families, preserving routines and sleep-wake patterns, and helping the miners retain a sense of agency and manage boredom. The report says the men played dominoes and improvised games, and watched soccer on a small screen. It also describes heat, humidity, rationed food and water, panic, and trauma that continued after the rescue. Those details come from the report and should not be taken to mean every miner experienced the crisis in the same way.

The series’ announced scope follows the experience from the collapse and the group’s improvised social order underground through the technical challenge of reaching the men, the rescue, and its longer-term toll.
