In tributes reported on February 27, 2025, Nathan Lane remembered working with Gene Hackman on The Birdcage, while Viola Davis praised Hackman’s performances across several genres. Francis Ford Coppola, Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman, George Takei, Mel Brooks and Tom Hanks also honored the actor, whose career included two Academy Award-winning performances.
Nathan Lane remembered Hackman as a favorite actor and a generous scene partner
Lane, Hackman’s co-star in the 1996 comedy The Birdcage, recalled telling him repeatedly that he was Lane’s favorite actor. In a statement aired by CNN and reported by The Guardian and TheWrap on February 27, Lane described what he saw while working alongside him:
“Gene Hackman was my favorite actor, as I think I told him every day we worked together on The Birdcage. Getting to watch him up close, it was easy to see why he was one of our greatest. You could never catch him acting. Simple and true, thoughtful and soulful, with just a hint of danger. He was as brilliant in comedy as he was in drama and thankfully his film legacy will live on forever. It was a tremendous privilege to get to share the screen with him, and remains one of my fondest memories. Rest in peace.”
Lane’s recollection links Hackman’s naturalistic screen presence to the range that made him convincing in both comedy and drama.

Viola Davis praised Hackman’s range
Davis named four films spanning different kinds of stories and performances in her tribute, published by TheWrap and reported by The Guardian:
“Loved you in everything! The Conversation, The French Connection, The Poseidon Adventure, Unforgiven – tough yet vulnerable. You were one of the greats. God bless those who loved you. Rest well, sir.”

The phrase “tough yet vulnerable” captures the contrast Davis saw across those roles: formidable characters whose performances also conveyed human uncertainty and feeling.

Directors and co-stars recalled his artistry
Francis Ford Coppola, who directed Hackman in The Conversation, reflected on the actor’s complexity as well as his work. As reported by The Guardian and TheWrap, Coppola wrote:
“The loss of a great artist, always cause for both mourning and celebration: Gene Hackman a great actor, inspiring and magnificent in his work and complexity. I mourn his loss, and celebrate his existence and contribution.”
Clint Eastwood, Hackman’s collaborator on Unforgiven, called him “a dear friend” he would miss. The Guardian quoted Eastwood’s assessment: “There was no finer actor than Gene. Intense and instinctive. Never a false note.” Morgan Freeman described working with Hackman as one of the personal highlights of his career.
Actors celebrated his ability to disappear into a role
George Takei praised Hackman’s capacity to make a character’s inner life visible. The Guardian reported Takei’s words: “Gene Hackman could play anyone, and you could feel a whole life behind it. He could be everyone and no one, a towering presence or an everyday Joe. That’s how powerful an actor he was. He will be missed, but his work will live on forever.”
Best Value
Tom Hanks put Hackman’s singularity more briefly, writing, as reported by The Guardian: “There has never been a ‘Gene Hackman Type.’ There has only been Gene Hackman.” Mel Brooks, meanwhile, remembered Hackman’s comic turn as the Blind Hermit in Young Frankenstein.

Hackman won the Academy Award for best actor for The French Connection in 1972 and the supporting-actor award for Unforgiven in 1993, according to The Guardian. TheWrap also described him as a two-time Oscar winner and highlighted films including The Birdcage, The Conversation and The Poseidon Adventure. The Guardian characterized his film career as 40 years and reported that he retired in 2004.
The contrast between the titles named in these tributes helps explain their emphasis on range: Davis recalled tense, dramatic roles, Lane pointed to his comedy, and Brooks remembered a comic supporting performance. The cited reports establish the films named, but not their current streaming or home-video availability.
What was reported about Hackman’s death on February 27, 2025
