Nas described the collaboration as a long time coming and framed the wider project around celebrating hip-hop’s legacy and inspiring the genre—not as an explicitly stated bid for “rap supremacy.”
What is Nas’s new album?
Light-Years is the full-length collaboration between Nas and producer DJ Premier most likely meant by the “new album” in the headline. HipHopDX reported on November 25, 2025, that the pair had revealed the album title, artwork and December 12 release date via Mass Appeal Records. The report described it as the seventh and final installment in Mass Appeal’s Legend Has It… series. HipHopDX’s announcement report

What Nas said about the album and the series
Nas called the collaboration a long time coming: “I can’t wait for people to finally hear it. I don’t know about anybody else, but for me and him, it was personally a long time coming for us to do it.”
He also described the broader Legend Has It… series as a celebration of hip-hop’s legacy and an effort to encourage the genre. “This series is to encourage [and] inspire hip hop and remind us all [of] the pureness of hip hop. I hope that we all can do this together,” he said, according to HipHopDX.
#1 Best Overall
Nas connected the series to the spirit of 1995 while emphasizing that its purpose was forward-looking: “It’s 1995 all over again,” he said, adding that 2025 was “not going backwards” but “going forward.” He described the feeling as one of urgency, celebration and recognition that music from 30 years earlier was “still thriving right now.” HipHopDX
Why Nas and DJ Premier’s reunion matters
The collaboration draws on a partnership with a long history in Nas’s catalog. HipHopDX points to earlier Nas–Premier tracks including “N.Y. State of Mind,” “Represent,” “Nas Is Like” and “2nd Childhood.” The report said Light-Years would bring together new material and some older ideas the two had discussed in past years. Nas said, “I’m going to say at least two of those ideas happened on this album.”

Did Nas call it a bid for rap supremacy?
The available statements do not establish that Nas described Light-Years as a bid for rap supremacy. That phrase is headline framing, not a documented quote or stated album objective in HipHopDX’s announcement. Apple Music uses similar language about a rapper seeking to “dominate hip-hop—and the charts” in its editorial description of Nas’s 1996 album It Was Written; that description concerns the older album, not Light-Years. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Light-Years still Nas’s latest release?
No. Apple Music’s Nas catalog lists Light-Years as a 2025 album, but identifies Feature Presentation 2025 as his latest release, dated March 12, 2026. Apple Music describes that release as a 15-song, 35-minute collection revisiting Nas’s guest verses for the Legend Has It… series, with commentary between tracks. So Light-Years is the album behind the original announcement, but it is not the latest item in Nas’s catalog as listed by Apple Music on October 8, 2026.
