Who do Nathan Lane, Matt Bomer and Nathan Lee Graham play?
Nathan Lane plays Bunny Schneiderman, Matt Bomer plays Jerry Frank and Nathan Lee Graham plays Arthur Broussard. Linda Lavin played Sybil Schneiderman, Bunny’s mother. Bunny’s friendships become his love story
In Out’s March 27, 2025 interview, Lane described Bunny as a successful businessman who invites Arthur and Jerry to live with him after their mutual friend George dies. He characterized Bunny as emotional and lonely, and saw the bond between the men as the character’s central romance: “When he says he’s never had the great love of his life, that in a sense, this friendship has been his love story, that’s very genuine.” Lane also praised the ensemble and described making the show as an especially happy television experience.

Jerry’s comic lineage and the safety of friends
Bomer said he shaped Jerry’s comic persona with classic sitcom characters in mind, including Woody from Cheers, Rose from The Golden Girls, Edith from All in the Family and Phoebe from Friends. He also connected the series’ chosen-family theme to his own younger years in New York, when friends offered a safe haven before he had come out to his family. As he put it in Out, “Until you can live your authenticity in all aspects of your life and it’s safe to do that, they are your gateway. They are your safe haven. They are your future. They are your path to finding your true self.”
Arthur gets more than a stock comic role
Out describes Graham’s Arthur as a Black gay man whose long-term husband has died and whose career as a high-profile fashion magazine editor has ended. Graham said the writing gives Arthur real dimensions. In a Dallas Voice interview, he framed the cast’s goal as entertaining people while helping viewers feel seen and represented—not speaking on behalf of every queer viewer. “I think the most important lesson here is that you lean in and continue to be who you are, your most authentic self and put it up for the world to see,” he said.

Why is Mid-Century Modern compared with The Golden Girls?
The comparison is easy to understand: both shows bring a group of friends together in a shared home, include an older mother in the household and use companionship and aging as comic material. It is useful shorthand for the ensemble setup, but it can obscure the newer show’s specific focus on three gay men building a later-life family.
Creator David Kohan told QBurgh the Golden Girls label was “a shorthand” rather than the creators’ intended point of departure. That distinction matters: Mid-Century Modern is not presented as a remake, but as its own sitcom about these characters and their relationships. What early crushes did the actors remember?
In Queerty’s March 28, 2025 cast interview, the actors recalled the early attractions they called “tummy tingles.” Lane named Alain Delon after seeing him in The Yellow Rolls-Royce. Graham remembered wanting to be Diana Ross and being attracted to Billy Dee Williams in Mahogany. Bomer cited Albert Brooks in Broadcast News, Kevin Costner and Gerald McRaney among his early and later attractions. These are personal recollections, not connections between those performers or films and the sitcom.

No second season was made. UPI reported on September 30, 2025, that Hulu would not renew the series, citing creator Max Mutchnick’s announcement. Hulu’s listing continues to show its first season of 10 episodes. UPI’s report covers the decision; the listing status is on Hulu.
