The counter at the 2025 Emmy Awards showed Nate Bargatze’s charity pledge dropping when acceptance speeches ran long, but the Boys & Girls Clubs of America did not receive a reduced or negative gift. The Associated Press reported that Bargatze ultimately gave $250,000 and CBS added $100,000, for a combined $350,000.
How the Emmys charity counter worked
At the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards on September 14, 2025, host Nate Bargatze announced a starting pledge of $100,000 to Boys & Girls Clubs of America. The rule set a 45-second limit for acceptance speeches: the amount changed by $1,000 for every second a speech ran over or under that mark. ABC Audio reported that shorter speeches increased the amount while longer ones reduced it.

The counter was a live on-air device tied to speech lengths, not a final accounting of what the charity would receive. The Associated Press reported that its displayed total reached negative $60,000 during the ceremony.
How much did the charity ultimately receive?
The Associated Press reported on September 15, 2025, that Bargatze gave $250,000 and CBS contributed another $100,000. Together, the reported gifts totaled $350,000. The negative figure belonged to the counter during the show; it did not mean the organization owed money or ended up with a negative donation.

Before announcing the final amount, Bargatze said, “The number, I’ll be honest with you, was embarrassing.” Lisa Anastasi, Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s chief development and external relations officer, called the gift a “generous surprise” and said it would support programs and children and teens who attend the organization’s Clubs.
What Bargatze said about the stunt
In an ABC Audio report published September 26, Bargatze said the idea came from a genuine charitable impulse: “It came from a real place of heart.” He also said he had not intended to put award winners on the spot. According to his later account, his decision to give $250,000 was not planned in advance.

Where and when the ceremony took place
The Television Academy’s event announcement identifies the ceremony as the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles and broadcast on CBS. The awards recognized television programming and individual achievements for the 2024–2025 season. The Academy said the telecast was available on demand through Paramount+ through September 21, 2025; that was a historical availability window and does not establish where the show can be streamed now.
