Sunrise presenter Natalie “Nat” Barr said she used baby oil while sunbathing at Scarborough Beach in her youth and recalled that sun protection was not a priority for her then. In a 2024 interview, she described her skin cancer diagnosis as a “huge wake-up call”—but her account does not establish that her past sun exposure caused her individual cancer.
What Nat Barr disclosed about her diagnosis
Barr told New Idea that a pimple on her nose persisted rather than fading, so she visited a dermatologist. She said the dermatologist confirmed skin cancer and that it was removed without surgery. The interview does not identify the cancer subtype, stage, or pathology findings, and it does not provide independent clinical documentation.
“When you hear the ‘C’ word, the shock goes right through you,” Barr said, adding, “Your mind goes off on a tangent.” She also said she was thankful it had been caught early.
What she confessed about sunbathing
Barr recalled growing up in Western Australia in the 1970s and 1980s and using baby oil while sunbathing on Scarborough Beach. She said people around her did not think about skin cancer at the time and that she wore a hat only if it matched her outfit.

That recollection is the personal history behind the headline’s “major confession.” It is not evidence that this exposure caused Barr’s cancer; the interview does not make that clinical determination.
Why she called the diagnosis a wake-up call
Barr described the diagnosis as a “huge wake-up call” and said she intended to make greater efforts to protect herself from the sun. In the interview, she reflected that even an early diagnosis made her consider what could be lost if the outcome were worse. This was her stated response, not an endorsement of a particular product or a substitute for medical advice.
