Naruto and Kurama’s most important moments trace a shift from a fearful bond imposed at Naruto’s birth to trust, shared purpose, and sacrifice. This is an editorial guide to the turning points—not an official ranking of every appearance.
Why Naruto and Kurama’s relationship began in fear
Kurama—the Nine Tails—was sealed inside Naruto moments after his birth, according to the NARUTO OFFICIAL SITE character database. Naruto inherited the burden before he could understand it. The official anime overview explains that villagers feared and hated him because the Nine Tails was sealed within him, making Kurama’s presence part of Naruto’s childhood isolation (official anime overview).
This is the relationship’s starting point: Naruto and Kurama are bound together by circumstance, and the human cost falls on a child who has no control over the seal or the villagers’ response.
Episode 466: Naruto fights to control the Nine Tails’ power
“The Orange Spark”
In Episode 466, “The Orange Spark,” Naruto is inside his mind, continuing to battle the Nine Tails as he tries to take control of its immense power. The official episode synopsis places the struggle within the “Nine-Tails Taming and Karmic Encounters” arc, which the anime overview identifies as episodes 463–495.

It is a key step toward using Kurama’s power, but not a neat victory that settles their relationship. The synopsis describes Naruto as still fighting to gain control.
Episodes 547–548: Kurama begins to understand Naruto
Empathy changes the balance
In Episode 547, “Nine Tails,” Naruto promises to free Four Tails from Madara’s control. As he does, Kurama recalls its time sealed inside Naruto, according to the official Episode 547 synopsis. The promise matters because Naruto’s concern extends beyond his own struggle: he recognizes another tailed beast’s captivity.

But their time together has made Nine Tails understand Naruto more than anyone.” As Naruto tries to free Four Tails, Kurama begins to change. Their bond is no longer only a contest over power; time together and Naruto’s empathy have altered how Kurama sees him.
The war: Kurama’s chakra becomes protection for others
Naruto shares what once isolated him
During the Great Ninja War, Naruto uses himself as a conduit to share Kurama’s chakra with members of the Allied Shinobi Forces. The NARUTO OFFICIAL SITE’s 2022 anniversary retrospective describes the reversal plainly: “Using himself as a conduit, Naruto shares the Nine Tails’ chakra with his allies!!” Power once associated with danger and fear becomes something Naruto can share to protect his comrades.

Episode 583: Kurama and Gyuki face the Ten Tails
“The Allied Shinobi Forces Jutsu”
Episode 583, “The Allied Shinobi Forces Jutsu,” shows Kurama attacking the Ten Tails alongside the war effort. The official episode synopsis says Kurama and Gyuki exhaust their chakra and fade away. It is a reminder that the partnership’s power has limits, even as Kurama fights alongside the allies rather than against Naruto.

Episode 613: Kurama is extracted from Naruto
“A True Ending”
In Episode 613, “A True Ending,” Kurama is extracted from Naruto, and the Tailed Beasts are imprisoned inside the Gedo Statue, according to the official synopsis. After their cooperation has grown into a genuine bond, the separation is a grave reversal: Naruto loses the partner whose power he had learned to share, and Kurama is caught up in the enemy’s plan.
Baryon Mode: Kurama’s sacrifice and later return
A costly final act—and a changed circumstance
In Boruto, Kurama helps Naruto activate Baryon Mode in the battle against Isshiki Otsutsuki, at the cost of Kurama’s life. The official Boruto Database entry describes the transformation and sacrifice. It is the ultimate expression of their cooperation: Kurama knowingly helps Naruto meet a threat at an extreme personal cost.

It notes that the unusually rapid occurrence has no clear cause at the moment. That development means Kurama’s sacrifice is not the final state of his story, even though it remains a defining moment in his relationship with Naruto.
When does Naruto become friends with the Nine Tails?
The clearest official turning point is Episode 548, “Kurama,” whose synopsis says that their time together has led the Nine Tails to understand Naruto. Episodes 547–548 build that change through Naruto’s promise to free Four Tails; the later sharing of chakra with the Allied Shinobi Forces shows their cooperation in action.
