Neither Naruto nor Bleach is objectively better: the right choice depends on the kind of story you want. Pick Naruto for an outcast’s coming-of-age journey toward leadership in a ninja society; pick Bleach for ghost stories, Soul Reapers and supernatural action rooted in the afterlife.
What sets Naruto and Bleach apart?
Both are action series built around young protagonists, but their central hooks point in different directions. Naruto, created by Masashi Kishimoto, follows Naruto Uzumaki, a mischievous academy student who dreams of becoming Hokage. His village treats him with disdain because the Nine-Tailed Fox was sealed inside him as a baby. The official Naruto site frames the story around that ambition and rejection; VIZ describes it as a young shinobi’s mission to become the world’s greatest ninja.

Bleach, created by Tite Kubo, begins with Ichigo Kurosaki’s ability to see ghosts. When a Hollow attacks his family, Ichigo becomes a Soul Reaper and takes on the work of protecting people and spirits. VIZ’s Bleach series page presents a premise built around supernatural threats and the boundary between the living world and the afterlife.
That difference is the clearest way to choose: Naruto starts with a boy seeking recognition and a place in his community; Bleach starts with a teenager drawn into a spirit-world conflict. The premises suggest different kinds of journeys, but they do not prove that one series develops its characters better.

Which has the stronger character journey?
Choose Naruto for a story anchored in rejection and ambition
Naruto’s stated goal—to become Hokage—gives his story a visible destination, while his treatment by the village gives that ambition an emotional starting point. If you want the protagonist’s social standing and pursuit of leadership to be central to the appeal, Naruto is the more natural fit.
Choose Bleach for a protagonist pulled into a new role
Ichigo’s starting point is different: seeing ghosts becomes the doorway into a responsibility he did not seek. His transition from ghost-seer to Soul Reaper makes the supernatural conflict personal from the outset. Prefer a hero whose path begins with an encounter with the spirit world rather than a long-held public ambition? Start with Bleach.
Rank #2
There is no evidence-based character-writing winner here. The official descriptions establish each protagonist’s starting situation, not a definitive ranking of the arcs that follow.
Which story and world are a better match?
Naruto draws its identity from shinobi life: ninja training, village society and the institutions surrounding a young person’s pursuit of leadership. Its premise makes community and belonging part of the story’s foundation.
Rank #3
Bleach makes the supernatural its organizing principle. Ghosts, Hollows, Soul Reapers and spiritual institutions give it a setting that crosses between ordinary life and the afterlife. If you want the world itself to hinge on spirit lore, that is the stronger match.
These settings offer different kinds of worldbuilding rather than a measurable winner. Choose the society and mythology you most want to spend time in.
Rank #4
How do pacing, action and tone compare?
Neither official premise or publication page establishes which series has better pacing, fight choreography, visual design or tonal consistency. Those are matters of how a reader or viewer experiences the full work, not facts settled by the series descriptions.
A useful way to make the choice is to ask what kind of action and atmosphere you want: Naruto puts ninja society and the protagonist’s pursuit of recognition at the center of its setup; Bleach places spirit-world conflict and Soul Reaper duties at the center of its own. For an individual reader, the deciding factor may be which setting, character premise and style of supernatural or martial conflict feels more compelling.

How much of each series is there to read or watch?
The available official figures measure different formats, so they should not be treated as a direct length comparison.
| Series | Manga | Anime |
|---|---|---|
| Naruto | The official site says the manga began in 1999, concluded in 2014 and has 700 chapters. | The official site says the anime adaptation began broadcasting in 2002; the cited page does not provide a comparable all-series episode total. |
| Bleach | VIZ dates serialization to 2001–2016. | The official anime site describes the classic television series as 366 episodes, beginning in October 2004, and says it led to four feature films. It describes Thousand-Year Blood War as the anime’s concluding arc. |
Sources: the Naruto Official Site, VIZ Media’s Bleach page and the Bleach anime site. Chapter and episode counts are not equivalent measures of commitment, and these figures do not support a clean comparison of total viewing time.
As of October 8, 2026, VIZ’s Bleach brand page lists the final part of BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War as beginning July 25, 2026 on Hulu on Disney+. Streaming availability can vary by territory and change over time, so check the service in your region.
Which one should you start with?
- Start with Naruto if an outcast’s pursuit of recognition and village leadership sounds more appealing than a spirit-world premise.
- Start with Bleach if ghosts, Soul Reapers and afterlife mythology are what you want from an action series.
- Choose the manga if you want to experience the original serialization; choose the anime if you prefer the stories in animated form. Check regional availability before relying on a particular streaming service.
Both series have substantial followings, but their official circulation figures use different wording and do not share an aligned publication date. The Naruto Official Site reports more than 250 million global print copies sold, while the Bleach anime site reports more than 130 million volumes sold to date. Those figures provide context, not an apples-to-apples sales ranking.
One distinction independent of personal preference: VIZ says Bleach received the 2005 Shogakukan Manga Award in the shonen category. An award is a notable recognition, not proof that it is the better series for every reader.
