Research informed the production
Showrunner Chris Brancato said he held Murphy and Peña’s life rights, interviewed them about their task-force experience, and used them as technical consultants. He also described research interviews in Colombia with law-enforcement officials, journalists, military members, people connected to Escobar’s estate, victims’ loved ones, and then-president Juan Manuel Santos. Brancato said the production used historical footage and a documentary-style approach. These details describe the show’s research process, not a guarantee that each scene is factual. In a 2022 interview, Murphy and Peña said Netflix changed or heightened aspects of their stories. Murphy said the agents did not keep bottles of alcohol on their desks, despite the show’s depiction of hard-drinking investigators.
