Infinite Reality announced on March 25, 2025, that it had entered a definitive agreement to acquire the Napster brand for $207 million. The announcement described a planned transformation of the streaming service into a more social, immersive platform for artists and fans. It did not, by itself, establish that the acquisition had closed.

What happened in the Napster deal?

Infinite Reality said it had agreed to acquire the Napster brand for $207 million. The Associated Press also reported the buyer and announced amount. The available announcements describe a definitive agreement; they do not establish a closing date or final accounting terms. Infinite Reality’s announcement and AP’s report are the cited accounts of the transaction.

That distinction matters: an announced agreement is not the same as independently documented completion. The sources cited here do not show when the deal closed, or whether the final terms differed from the announced value.

What did Infinite Reality plan to do with Napster?

At the time of the announcement, the buyer described a vision for turning Napster into a social music platform where artists could connect with fans and earn money from their work. The stated concepts included virtual 3D concert spaces, digital and physical merchandise, and expanded artist analytics. These were plans presented with the deal, not evidence that those features were subsequently launched.

Napster CEO Jon Vlassopulos framed the proposal as a response to how online culture had changed: “The internet has evolved from desktop to mobile, from mobile to social, and now we are entering the immersive era. Yet, music streaming has remained largely the same. It’s time to reimagine what’s possible.”

Why does the Napster name carry so much history?

Napster began in 1999 as a peer-to-peer file-sharing service launched by Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker. It became a prominent way to exchange music files, then shut down amid copyright litigation in the early 2000s. The brand later returned in a different form as a subscription music service. The Los Angeles Times recounts the brand’s ownership changes and revival in its history of Napster, including coverage of All the Rave.

What is Napster now?

In May 2025, Infinite Reality announced that it would rebrand as Napster Corporation and launch Napster AI, including a beta experience called Napster Spaces. That was a corporate identity and strategy announcement; it is not evidence that the legacy music app itself became an AI agent.
