For decades, it was credited to Associated Press photographer Nick Út, who received the 1973 Pulitzer Prize associated with the image. In May 2025, AP said its investigation found no definitive evidence to change that credit; World Press Photo suspended its attribution to Út but did not name a replacement. The photograph is authentic. Who took it remains unresolved.
What does the photograph show?
Titled “The Terror of War” and widely known as “Napalm Girl,” the photograph was made on June 8, 1972, near Trang Bang, Vietnam. It shows nine-year-old Phan Thị Kim Phúc fleeing with other children after South Vietnamese planes mistakenly dropped napalm on South Vietnamese troops and civilians. The image became one of the defining photographs of the Vietnam War.
World Press Photo records that AP editors debated whether to publish the image because it showed children, including Kim Phúc, nude. They decided its news value warranted publication.
Why is the photographer’s identity contested?
The long-standing credit to Nick Út came under renewed scrutiny after the documentary The Stringer asserted that AP stringer Nguyễn Thành Nghệ took the photograph. That is the documentary’s allegation, not an established finding. World Press Photo says the film prompted its review, while AP says it investigated the film’s specific claims.

The two organizations have responded differently to an incomplete historical record. Their decisions reflect different treatments of uncertainty; neither has conclusively established who pressed the shutter.
What did AP conclude?
AP says it conducted an investigation lasting nearly a year, including interviews and review of available footage, cameras, negatives and photographs. It identified questions and limitations in the historical record, but concluded that it lacked “the definitive evidence required by AP’s standards to change the credit.” AP therefore continues to credit Út.

What did World Press Photo decide?
In May 2025, World Press Photo suspended its attribution of the image to Út. Its analysis of location, distance and the camera used suggested that Nghệ or Huỳnh Công Phúc may have been better positioned to make the photograph. The organization did not reassign authorship because it found no conclusive evidence identifying another photographer.
The distinction matters: World Press Photo’s decision raises significant doubt about the established credit, but it is not a finding that Nghệ, Phúc or anyone else definitely took the picture.

Are the photograph and its awards still recognized?
The controversy concerns authorship, not whether the photograph depicts a real event. World Press Photo Executive Director Joumana El Zein Khoury said: “It is important to state that the picture itself is undisputed, and it is without question that this photograph represents a real moment in history that continues to reverberate in Vietnam, the United States, and globally.”
The photograph remains the 1973 World Press Photo of the Year, according to the organization’s award archive. AP reports that the image won the 1973 Pulitzer Prize and that Út received it.

So, who took the “Napalm Girl” photo?
The most accurate answer is that the photographer has not been conclusively established. AP retains the historical credit to Nick Út because its investigation did not find definitive evidence to change it. World Press Photo has suspended that attribution and identified Nghệ and Phúc as possible alternatives, without naming either as the photographer. The image’s authenticity and historical significance are not in dispute; its authorship is.
