No public evidence reviewed establishes that Dominic Evans is the masked person in the footage. The FBI describes the person as unidentified and is asking for information that could reveal their identity. Reports trace the claim about Evans to online speculation—not to a verified identification or publicly presented forensic evidence.
What do investigators say about the person in the footage?
The FBI says its Phoenix Field Office and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department are investigating Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance. According to the FBI’s official footage page, Guthrie was last seen at her Tucson, Arizona, residence in the Catalina Foothills on the evening of January 31, 2026. The FBI describes the footage as showing an armed individual apparently tampering with the front-door camera on the morning of her disappearance.
The FBI’s wording is direct: “The FBI seeks information that will lead to the identity of this individual.” Its page, accessed October 8, 2026, offers a reward of up to $100,000 for information leading to Guthrie’s location and/or the arrest and conviction of anyone involved. That appeal does not name Evans.
The Associated Press described the clips released on February 10, 2026, as showing a person in a ski mask, jacket, long pants, gloves, and a backpack. The person approached the camera, held a flashlight in their mouth, then tried to cover the lens with a gloved hand and vegetation. The brief footage does not identify the person; AP reported that authorities had not identified suspects at that stage.

Where did the claim about Dominic Evans come from?
E! News reported on February 26, 2026, that online users singled out Evans because he had been in a band with Tommaso Cioni, Guthrie’s son-in-law, and because commenters claimed he resembled the masked person. Those are the reported grounds for the online allegation, not evidence that Evans took part in a crime.
E! News’s account of a New York Times interview quoted Evans saying, “I feel like someone’s taken my name.” It also reported him saying: “I don’t know—monetary, clickbait, to be relevant, entertainment—but there are innocent people that get hurt.” These comments describe the effect he said the accusations had on him; they do not establish who appears in the footage.

Why the backpack does not identify the wearer
The backpack is a reported investigative lead, not an identification. The Associated Press reported on February 16, 2026, that Sheriff Chris Nanos said the only clothing item definitively identified from the person’s appearance was a 25-liter Ozark Trail Hiker Pack. Nanos said investigators were working with Walmart management to develop leads because the pack was exclusive to Walmart. The sheriff’s department cautioned that the possibility that other clothing was also purchased at Walmart was not definitive.

TIME reported on February 16, 2026, that the FBI described the person as male, approximately 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall, with an average build, and carrying a black, 25-liter Ozark Trail Hiker Pack. A brief, masked recording and a general description are not a sound basis for amateur body matching. Neither the backpack nor the reported height range establishes the wearer’s identity or connects Evans to the case.

- The FBI’s public appeal calls the person in the footage unidentified and asks the public for information that could identify them.
- Reporting attributes the Evans claim to online speculation based on his reported bandmate connection to Cioni and alleged resemblance.
- The sources reviewed do not establish that Evans is the person in the footage, and they do not show authorities publicly naming him as a suspect or identifying him as the masked person.
- A reported personal association, a claimed visual resemblance, or an investigative lead about clothing is not proof of involvement.
The FBI page remains a live public appeal, but the sources cited here do not establish the complete status of the investigation as of October 8, 2026. Anyone with relevant information can use the FBI’s official appeal rather than attempting to identify or confront a person based on online comparisons.
