Director and co-writer Nagesh Kukunoor says the Hindi series shifts the story’s viewpoint from the police to Mrs Deshpande herself—and trades the French original’s oppressive mood for a more accessible thriller shaped by character and relationships.
What makes Mrs Deshpande hard to read?
“Mrs Deshpande is upbeat, positive, but unreadable,” Kukunoor told Scroll in an interview published December 11, 2025. The contradiction is central to his conception of Dixit’s character: her apparent warmth does not make her transparent, and the performance is built around the control she maintains.

Kukunoor wanted her to move very little. As he put it, “A lot is communicated through the way she looks at people.” He described the early work with Dixit as exploratory, including look tests and readings; finding the right “sur,” or note, took effort in the first days on set.
How does the Hindi series change the French original?
Mrs Deshpande is an Indian adaptation of the French series La Mante. Kukunoor identifies the most important adaptation choice as the point of view: “In the French original, the story is told from the cop’s point of view. We have told the story from Mrs Deshpande’s perspective.” The shift makes the imprisoned killer, rather than the investigator, the center through which the story is experienced.

He also wanted to change the atmosphere without abandoning realism. “I wanted realism, but I didn’t want that oppressive mood,” he said. His stated aim was a more accessible Indian thriller register that still brought together suspense, drama and character. That is Kukunoor’s description of the adaptation’s intent, rather than a scene-by-scene comparison of the two series.
Why did Kukunoor cast Madhuri Dixit?
Kukunoor and co-writer Rohit Banawlikar began thinking about the lead while writing the first episode. Carole Bouquet’s performance in the French series prompted them to consider an Indian equivalent; Dixit came to mind, and they wrote the rest of the series for her. Kukunoor says she committed after reading the scripts, not simply on the strength of an early pitch.

A separate PTI interview report published by Hindustan Times says Dixit initially wondered, “me, serial killer?” before being drawn to the character’s story and layers. She and Kukunoor described an emphasis on emotional depth, revelations and relationships rather than gore. Kukunoor said the production made a “very, very conscious choice” to keep “the drama and the twists and the relationships working as opposed to the gore and the violence” taking center stage.
What is Mrs Deshpande about?
Applause Entertainment’s official series page describes a run of murders echoing the crimes of a convicted killer. Police turn to Mrs Deshpande as they pursue the copycat and confront old wounds. A review by India Today gives a more specific account: an actor is killed in a way that recalls a serial killer’s methods from 25 years earlier, and Commissioner Arun Khatri seeks help from Seema Deshpande, played by Dixit, who is imprisoned. That detail is the review’s plot description, not the official logline.
