My Old Ass is a 2024 coming-of-age comedy-drama written and directed by Megan Park. It follows Elliott, an 18-year-old from rural Ontario who is preparing to leave home for college when she encounters her 39-year-old self during a mushroom trip. Maisy Stella plays the younger Elliott, while Aubrey Plaza plays her older counterpart.
The film uses that fantastical premise less as a traditional time-travel adventure than as a conversation about hindsight, first love, family, queer identity, and the uneasy feeling that adulthood must begin immediately. In the United States, Prime Video’s current listing identifies the 89-minute film as available through the service, although availability and subscription terms can change by country and date.
What is My Old Ass about?
My Old Ass takes place during Elliott’s final summer before college. She is eager to leave her rural Ontario home, move to Toronto, and reinvent herself. The future feels like a solution: once she gets away, she can become the person she believes she is meant to be.
During a mushroom trip, Elliott meets an older version of herself. The encounter turns the familiar fantasy of speaking to one’s future self into a literal relationship between two versions of the same person. Older Elliott offers warnings and advice, but the younger Elliott does not simply receive a set of useful instructions. She has to decide whether knowing what may happen can actually help her—and whether following advice from the future might deprive her of the experiences that create that advice in the first place.

That tension is the film’s central idea. My Old Ass is not primarily interested in explaining how its time-bending encounter works or building an elaborate science-fiction mythology. Instead, it uses the premise to make hindsight visible. The older Elliott embodies regret, fatigue, affection, and knowledge that the younger version cannot yet possess. The younger Elliott represents impatience, possibility, and the conviction that the next stage of life will finally make everything clear.
Why the film’s “last summer” setting matters
The film’s emotional setting is the stretch of time just before a major departure. Elliott is not only preparing to attend college; she is preparing to leave the landscape, routines, and family relationships that have defined her childhood. Her excitement is genuine, but so is the older Elliott’s insistence that leaving home does not mean the past has stopped mattering.
This makes the film particularly recognizable to viewers who have experienced a move away from home, the end of high school, or any transition in which anticipation and grief arrive together. Elliott wants adulthood to start quickly. The older version of herself understands that the present she is trying to escape may later become the period she most wants to revisit.
The film therefore asks a more complicated question than “Should Elliott go to college?” or “Can she change the future?” Its deeper question is whether becoming independent requires rejecting the people and places that made her—or learning how to carry them with her.
A coming-of-age film built around hindsight
Many coming-of-age stories portray maturity as the accumulation of new experiences. My Old Ass adds an unusual complication: Elliott can speak directly with a person who has already lived through some version of those experiences. That creates both comfort and pressure.
Older Elliott appears to know what the younger one should value. But advice is not the same as understanding. The younger Elliott still has to live through uncertainty, attraction, conflict, and separation. The film’s premise suggests that hindsight can illuminate the past without allowing anyone to skip the process of growing up.

Megan Park’s own comments about wanting to speak to her younger self provide a useful lens for the story. After the heavier subject matter of her feature directorial debut, The Fallout, Park aimed for something more uplifting and nostalgic—an experience that could evoke the summers of youth while retaining emotional seriousness. That balance is central to My Old Ass: jokes and fantasy sit alongside family feeling, romantic uncertainty, and the sadness of knowing that a treasured period is ending.
Queer identity and first love
Elliott is presented as a queer teenager, and the film’s romance and identity themes are part of its broader transition story rather than an isolated subplot. Her understanding of herself develops alongside her changing relationship with home, family, friendship, and the future she imagines in Toronto.
This matters because the film is not simply a generic story about a teenager receiving advice from an older self. Elliott is also navigating how to recognize what she wants and how to understand herself while standing at the boundary between adolescence and adulthood. The queer coming-of-age dimension gives the film another layer of self-discovery without reducing Elliott’s identity to a single dramatic issue.
Cast and creative team
- Maisy Stella as 18-year-old Elliott: The role marked Stella’s feature-film debut. Her performance carries the younger Elliott’s restless energy and resistance to being told to slow down.
- Aubrey Plaza as 39-year-old Elliott: Plaza gives the older self a contrasting presence shaped by hindsight and regret. Casting the two actors makes the film’s central relationship immediately legible: one Elliott is eager to move forward, while the other knows what can be lost along the way.
- Megan Park: Park wrote and directed the film. It is her second feature as a director after The Fallout.
- Percy Hynes White, Maddie Ziegler, and Kerrice Brooks: They are also part of the principal cast.
The film was produced by Tom Ackerley, Margot Robbie, Josey McNamara, and Steven Rales, according to Sundance’s official lineup materials.
Is My Old Ass a science-fiction film?
It contains a time-travel-like or fantastical premise, but calling it a conventional science-fiction film can create the wrong expectation. The older-self encounter is a storytelling device for exploring memory, regret, and the emotional meaning of a final summer. The film is better described as a coming-of-age comedy-drama with romantic, fantastical, and time-bending elements.
Sundance positioned the movie as an irreverent take on both the time-travel genre and teenage romance. Its interest lies less in rules, paradoxes, or technology than in the impossible emotional situation of meeting the person you might become.

Spoiler-light reasons to watch
- You like coming-of-age stories with a speculative twist: The film uses an impossible encounter to explore a very real fear—the possibility of rushing past the moments that matter.
- You enjoy stories about leaving home: Elliott’s move toward college gives the film a clear emotional deadline and makes ordinary family moments feel newly significant.
- You want a queer teen romance within a larger identity story: The romantic material is connected to Elliott’s broader process of figuring out who she is.
- You prefer comedy-drama over hard science fiction: The film emphasizes character, relationships, nostalgia, and emotional consequences rather than technical time-travel mechanics.
- You enjoy Aubrey Plaza’s dry contrast with a more openly restless protagonist: The two-Elliott structure creates the film’s primary comic and dramatic friction.
Spoiler discussion: what the older Elliott changes
Spoiler warning: The following section discusses the dramatic function of the older Elliott’s warnings and their consequences without attempting a complete scene-by-scene recap.
Older Elliott’s advice initially seems like a shortcut to a better life. If the future self knows what went wrong, perhaps the younger self can avoid the pain. But the film gradually treats that idea with skepticism. Warnings can make Elliott more alert, yet they can also make her anxious and interfere with her ability to experience the present naturally.
This is where the film’s fantasy premise becomes emotionally useful. Elliott is not only trying to change what will happen; she is trying to understand whether the future self’s unhappiness comes from particular events or from the habit of failing to appreciate the life already in front of her. The older Elliott’s presence turns ordinary decisions into tests of attention: will younger Elliott keep chasing the next stage, or notice what is happening now?
The result is less a puzzle about creating a perfect timeline than a reflection on how people construct regret. The older self may know more, but that knowledge does not make her all-powerful. The younger self may know less, but she has something the older version has lost: direct access to a moment before it becomes memory.
What kind of viewer is this film for?
My Old Ass is a good fit for viewers who want a warm, bittersweet film about family, first love, and the anxiety of growing up. It should appeal to audiences who enjoy speculative premises used for emotional storytelling rather than elaborate world-building.

It may be less suitable for viewers expecting a fast-moving time-travel adventure, a purely broad comedy, or a plot centered on explaining the mechanics of the encounter. The R rating and listed advisories also mean it is not best approached as a family film simply because its story begins with a teenager at home.

The Bottom Line

Its real subject is not the mechanics of time travel, but the difficulty of recognizing the value of a life while you are still eager to move on from it.
