Its central idea—an impostor who looks like All Might but represents the opposite kind of heroism—gives the spectacle a franchise-relevant hook. The trade-off is that this is the fourth theatrical film in the TV anime series, not a clean starting point for newcomers.
Is My Hero Academia: You’re Next worth watching?
For established fans, yes: the film offers a large-scale crisis, a familiar ensemble and a conflict that plays directly on what All Might means to the series. For casual viewers seeking a self-contained introduction to the franchise, it is a qualified recommendation. The movie’s scale and crowd of returning characters can be part of its appeal, but they also leave less room to establish everyone and their relationships from scratch.
The response has been broadly positive, though not unanimous. In a Rotten Tomatoes snapshot accessed in 2026, the film had a 95% Tomatometer from 19 reviews and a 91% Popcornmeter from more than 500 verified ratings; both figures can change. IndieWire reviewer David Opie, quoted on the aggregator, called it “quirky fun” and said devoted fans would get a “major kick out of its wit and intensity,” while other listed criticism points to a crowded cast and unevenness, including animation. The aggregate is a useful sign of reception, not a guarantee that every part of the film lands equally well. Rotten Tomatoes
What is the story, and how does Dark Might compare with All Might?
After an all-out war between heroes and villains has devastated Japan, a mysterious giant fortress appears. Deku and his classmates confront Dark Might, a man who resembles All Might but holds opposing ideals. The setup makes the conflict about more than a lookalike antagonist: it asks what happens when the image of a symbol of hope is separated from the principles that made him one.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That contrast is the film’s clearest thematic engine. All Might’s heroic stature is familiar to fans; Dark Might turns that recognition into a source of unease and conflict. The movie uses the resemblance to put the meaning and imitation of heroism at the center of its showdown, rather than making the villain simply another unrelated threat. The official premise is recorded by the Japanese Film Database.
How does the spectacle balance its cast and story?
The film leans into ensemble scale: Deku and his classmates face a crisis large enough to justify a fortress, a major villain and heightened action. That breadth gives returning characters a place in the event and helps the film feel like a theatrical escalation of the series. It also creates a familiar franchise-film tension: more faces and more moving parts can make the experience feel busy, and individual characters may have less space to develop than the central conflict requires.

Its tone mixes superhero spectacle with comedy and melodrama. That combination suits a story built around an iconic hero’s image, but it means the film is not only a sustained action rush. Viewers who enjoy the series’ shifts between earnest emotion, lighter character moments and oversized battles are better positioned to appreciate the mix. The criticism preserved by Rotten Tomatoes—especially concerns about crowding and unevenness—signals that the scale will not work equally well for everyone.
Do you need to watch the anime first?
You do not need to have watched every episode to understand the broad premise: heroes and villains have fought a devastating war, and a dangerous figure who resembles All Might emerges. But this is the fourth feature in the TV-anime film sequence, and it assumes familiarity with Deku, All Might, U.A.’s class and the setting. Newcomers can follow the basic conflict while missing the context that gives the ensemble and its heroic symbols their weight.

Is You’re Next canon?
The film is presented as part of the TV anime continuity, but the available film listings do not specify how its events affect the series’ main storyline.
