My Hero Academia: Vigilantes is an official anime spinoff set several years before My Hero Academia. It shifts the focus from licensed, celebrated heroes to people who intervene without official authority—including Koichi Haimawari, an aspiring hero who never became a professional. Season 1 began in April 2025, and season 2 started January 5, 2026.
What is My Hero Academia: Vigilantes?
Vigilantes is an official spinoff of My Hero Academia, adapted from the completed manga Vigilante: My Hero Academia Illegals. The manga was written by Hideyuki Furuhashi, illustrated by Betten Court, and ran on Shonen Jump+ from 2017 to 2022. The official anime site lists 15 collected volumes and also credits Kohei Horikoshi.
The anime takes place several years before the main series. Its setting is a society where, according to the official series introduction, around 80% of people have superhuman abilities; that figure describes the story’s fictional world, not real life. The central tension is legal as well as heroic: professional heroes have formal status and public recognition, while vigilantes help people without that standing.
Who are Koichi, Pop☆Step, and Knuckleduster?
Koichi Haimawari
Koichi is a university student who once admired heroes but gave up on becoming one. He still helps people, often while wearing an All Might costume. That impulse brings him into contact with two other outsiders and draws him toward vigilante work.

How does Vigilantes differ from the main series?
| Dimension | My Hero Academia | Vigilantes |
|---|---|---|
| Timeline | The main series’ events | Several years earlier |
| Hero status | Focuses on licensed, recognized heroes | Follows people acting outside formal hero recognition |
| Story focus | The main series’ broader hero story | Koichi and his companions intervening in immediate situations |
The contrast is not simply between heroes and villains. Vigilantes asks what happens when people who want to help lack the legal authority and public status associated with professional hero work.
