One For All is a transferable Quirk that accumulates power across generations, not merely a super-strength ability. Its core stockpiled power is joined by six inherited Quirks—Gearshift, Fa Jin, Danger Sense, Blackwhip, Smokescreen, and Float—which let Izuku Midoriya manipulate speed, store kinetic energy, detect threats, capture opponents, obscure the battlefield, and levitate.
What One For All actually is
One For All has two layers. Its core ability accumulates power from one holder to the next, while six additional Quirks inherited from the second through seventh holders eventually become available to Izuku Midoriya. Those six abilities are Gearshift, Fa Jin, Danger Sense, Blackwhip, Smokescreen, and Float.
The origin of the Quirk explains why it can be passed down. Yoichi Shigaraki already had a Quirk that allowed him to bestow Quirks on other people. His brother, All For One, forcibly gave Yoichi a separate power-stockpiling Quirk. The two abilities merged, creating One For All: a transferable legacy that grows stronger across successive users. The official character profile describes this origin and Yoichi’s role as the first holder on the official My Hero Academia character page.
That distinction matters. One For All is not simply a super-strength Quirk, and the six inherited abilities are not six unrelated powers that happen to sit beside it. The stockpiled core supplies the enormous physical output; the inherited Quirks provide specialized tools for movement, awareness, restraint, concealment, acceleration, and burst damage.

Every One For All holder and Quirk
| Holder | Quirk associated with One For All | Practical role |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Yoichi Shigaraki | Quirk Bestowal | The transfer ability whose merger with a power-stockpiling Quirk created One For All |
| 2. Toshitsugu Kudo | Gearshift | Changes the speed of an object the user touches |
| 3. Bruce | Fa Jin | Stores kinetic energy through repeated movement and releases it later |
| 4. Hikage Shinomori | Danger Sense | Detects approaching danger |
| 5. Daigoro Banjo | Blackwhip | Creates a whip-like energy used for attack, capture, and movement |
| 6. En | Smokescreen | Emits smoke for concealment and battlefield disruption |
| 7. Nana Shimura | Float | Allows the user to levitate |
| 8. Toshinori Yagi / All Might | One For All | The eighth holder, who primarily expressed its accumulated power as physical strength and speed |
| 9. Izuku Midoriya | One For All plus the manifested successor Quirks | The holder who combines the core power with the complete practical arsenal |
1. Yoichi Shigaraki — Quirk Bestowal
Yoichi was the first holder of One For All. His original Quirk, commonly described as Quirk Bestowal, allowed him to give a Quirk to another person. That ability alone was not One For All, but it provided the mechanism that let the newly merged power become a legacy rather than a power trapped in one body.
When All For One forcibly implanted a power-stockpiling Quirk into Yoichi, the two abilities combined. The result could both accumulate strength and move from person to person. Yoichi therefore contributed the foundation of One For All’s succession system, even though Quirk Bestowal is not one of the six specialized abilities later manifested by Midoriya.
2. Toshitsugu Kudo — Gearshift
Kudo was the second holder and a resistance fighter who helped free Yoichi. His Quirk, Gearshift, changes the speed of an object he touches.
Gearshift is best understood as velocity manipulation, not as ordinary super-speed. Its defining action is changing how fast a touched target moves. Inside One For All, that effect becomes much more dangerous because it can be paired with the physical force accumulated by the core. Instead of merely making Midoriya faster in a general sense, Gearshift gives him another way to alter the timing and velocity of movement during an attack or maneuver.

Bruce was the third holder. Fa Jin lets the user repeat movements, store the resulting kinetic energy, and release that energy later.
Fa Jin rewards preparation. Repeated motion builds a reserve that can be discharged at the moment it is most useful, turning ordinary movement into a sudden burst. Combined with One For All’s stockpiled physical power, it works as a burst amplifier rather than simply duplicating the core’s strength. Gearshift changes speed; Fa Jin banks energy generated through movement. Those functions overlap in combat, but they are not the same.
4. Hikage Shinomori — Danger Sense
Hikage Shinomori was the fourth holder. His Quirk, Danger Sense, detects danger approaching the user. It functions as One For All’s warning system, giving Midoriya an early alert that complements his more active combat abilities.
Danger Sense should not be described as infallible future sight. The official character description establishes threat detection, not a guarantee that every possible event will be predicted perfectly. Its practical value is in helping Midoriya recognize an incoming threat quickly enough to evade, counter, or reposition.

5. Daigoro Banjo — Blackwhip
Daigoro Banjo was the fifth holder, and Blackwhip is arguably the most broadly useful of the inherited abilities. It produces a black, whip-like energy that Midoriya can use to attack, capture opponents, grab distant objects, and change direction in the air.
Blackwhip expands One For All beyond direct physical blows. It gives Midoriya reach, restraint, and a form of three-dimensional movement. It can pull him toward an anchor point, bring an object to him, hold an opponent in place, or supplement a close-range strike. That versatility is also why Blackwhip is one of the most recognizable inherited Quirks for anime viewers.
Official final-conflict material continues to identify Blackwhip among the One For All abilities Midoriya uses. The power is also central to the later plan involving One For All and Shigaraki.
6. En — Smokescreen
En was the sixth holder. Smokescreen allows its user to emit smoke from the body and control its use as a concealment tool.

Smoke can obscure movement, interfere with an opponent’s line of sight, divide attention, and create an opening for escape or repositioning. It should not be treated as a poison, a gas attack, or a guaranteed incapacitating effect: the official description establishes smoke generation and control, not those extra properties.
Smokescreen is particularly valuable when paired with Midoriya’s other abilities. He can conceal a change in position, use Blackwhip to move through or around the obscured area, and rely on Danger Sense to remain aware of threats that an opponent may not be able to see clearly.

7. Nana Shimura — Float
Nana Shimura was the seventh holder and All Might’s mentor. Her Quirk, Float, allows the user to levitate.
Float supplies aerial positioning, but it should not be described as identical to unrestricted high-speed flight. The base ability is levitation. Midoriya’s broader aerial mobility comes from combining Float with Blackwhip, the core’s physical output, and other movement techniques. Float keeps him off the ground; the rest of the One For All toolkit helps him move, turn, brake, and attack while airborne.
8. Toshinori Yagi — All Might
All Might was the eighth holder of One For All. The official character profile identifies him as the successor who carried the Quirk before Midoriya and describes One For All as a power passed down through generations that accumulates strength.
All Might primarily expressed that accumulated power as overwhelming physical strength and speed. Unlike Midoriya, he did not visibly use the six predecessor Quirks as a combined toolkit. This does not mean he possessed a different version of One For All; it highlights the difference between how the eighth and ninth holders used the same growing legacy.
All Might eventually transferred One For All to Izuku Midoriya after recognizing the Quirkless teenager’s willingness to act heroically. The anime’s early official episode material records Midoriya receiving One For All before entering U.A. High School.
9. Izuku Midoriya — One For All’s complete practical arsenal
Izuku Midoriya was born Quirkless and became the ninth holder after inheriting One For All from All Might. Midoriya is the holder who accesses the core stockpiled power alongside Gearshift, Fa Jin, Danger Sense, Blackwhip, Smokescreen, and Float.
That combination changes the character of his fighting style. Earlier holders are most strongly associated with One For All’s accumulated strength, while Midoriya uses it as a layered system:
- Gearshift changes the speed of touched targets.
- Fa Jin stores kinetic energy generated through repeated movement and releases it in bursts.
- Danger Sense warns him about approaching threats.
- Blackwhip provides reach, restraint, capture, and aerial movement.
- Smokescreen disrupts visibility and conceals repositioning.
- Float gives him levitation and aerial positioning.
The individual abilities are specialized rather than universally dominant on their own. One For All makes them far more effective by adding generations of accumulated power and allowing Midoriya to switch between them in real time. That combination—not six independent superpowers that each function like a replacement for One For All—is what makes his version qualitatively different.
How the One For All Quirks work together
The six inherited Quirks cover complementary combat jobs:
| Combat need | Most relevant ability | What it contributes |
|---|---|---|
| Raw output | One For All’s core | Generationally accumulated physical power |
| Acceleration and timing | Gearshift | Changes the speed of touched objects |
| Explosive bursts | Fa Jin | Releases kinetic energy stored through repeated movement |
| Early warning | Danger Sense | Detects approaching danger |
| Reach and restraint | Blackwhip | Captures opponents, grabs objects, and redirects movement |
| Concealment | Smokescreen | Obscures the battlefield and disrupts visibility |
| Aerial positioning | Float | Keeps the user airborne and supports three-dimensional movement |
In practical terms, Midoriya can use Float to stay airborne, Blackwhip to change position or restrain a target, Smokescreen to hide the transition, Danger Sense to identify a threat, and Gearshift or Fa Jin to increase the force and timing of the next move. The exact value is situational: Smokescreen can help with concealment but may also complicate the battlefield, while Gearshift and Fa Jin demand control rather than functioning as effortless speed or strength upgrades.

This is the central answer to the question of why One For All becomes so elaborate in Midoriya’s hands. The core is a growing store of power. The inherited Quirks are a set of specialized instruments. Midoriya’s advantage comes from coordinating them instead of treating them as isolated attacks.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Full-series spoilers: what happens to One For All in the final conflict?
Danger Sense is stolen first. Shigaraki takes the Quirk from Midoriya, demonstrating that the inherited abilities inside One For All are not automatically beyond the reach of an opponent capable of stealing Quirks. The official episode summary describes this as an act of taking, not a normal voluntary succession; see the official episode summary.
One For All is then used as an offensive transfer. Kudo proposes sending One For All directly into Shigaraki’s inner world—the mental wound or interior space created by the conflict. The plan uses the legacy itself as an attack rather than handing it over to a new hero. The official summary for that stage specifically describes the transfer plan and Blackwhip’s role in the resulting assault; see the next official episode summary.
Midoriya carries out the transfer. In the final confrontation, Deku transfers One For All into Shigaraki so that he can enter and confront the conflict from within. This is a deliberate sacrifice and combat strategy, not the ordinary succession that took place when One For All passed from All Might to Midoriya. The official episode summary for the confrontation describes that transfer and its purpose; see the official final-conflict summary.
Best Value
Midoriya does not permanently retain the full arsenal afterward. The official character material records his postwar status as Quirkless again. It also describes him teaching at U.A. and participating in hero work with armor supplied by All Might. Any explanation that ends by saying Deku permanently keeps One For All, Gearshift, Fa Jin, Blackwhip, and the rest of the inherited set is therefore incomplete.

For a broader character reference, the Ultra Analysis official character guide includes profiles, statistics, trivia, art, and creator material. It is useful as a companion reference after the core explanation, but it should not be treated as a definitive account of every ending detail: the guide predates the manga’s final volume.
Readers who want the original story can start with the My Hero Academia manga box set. VIZ describes Box Set 1 as containing volumes 1 through 20, along with a poster and booklet. It is a collection-building and source-material option, not a specialized One For All reference book.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is One For All just a super-strength Quirk?
One For All is not only super strength. Its core accumulates power across successive holders, while six inherited Quirks add specialized abilities: Gearshift, Fa Jin, Danger Sense, Blackwhip, Smokescreen, and Float.
How many extra Quirks does One For All contain?
There are six specialized Quirks inherited from the second through seventh holders. Yoichi’s Quirk Bestowal is the foundational ability that merged with a power-stockpiling Quirk to create One For All, rather than one of those six later-manifested powers.
Does Deku permanently keep One For All?
No. After the final conflict, official character material records Midoriya as Quirkless again. He teaches at U.A. and participates in hero work with armor supplied by All Might.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: One For All is the combination of a power-accumulating core and six inherited Quirks. All Might mainly used the accumulated strength, while Midoriya turned the legacy into a coordinated system of acceleration, stored energy, warning, restraint, concealment, and levitation—before sacrificing the Quirk in the final confrontation and ultimately returning to a Quirkless status.
