Hoda Abrahim and Yasmin Elhady, the matchmakers featured in Hulu’s Muslim Matchmaker, advise singles not to rule someone out after a few dating-app texts or one tense first meeting. Their shorthand is “three dates, three months, three hundred questions”: give an initial connection a little time, then look more carefully at emotional connection, commitment timing and shared values. It is personal advice from the hosts—not a proven formula for finding a partner.
What is the rule the hosts swear by?
The phrase “three dates, three months, three hundred questions” describes three different stages of getting to know a potential partner. In an interview with PEOPLE published February 11, 2025, Abrahim and Elhady explained the thinking behind the approach.
- Three dates: Don’t make a quick decision based only on a few messages or a first date when nerves may get in the way.
- Three months: Allow time to develop an emotional connection and consider whether your commitment timelines align.
- Three hundred questions: Keep asking meaningful questions to learn about one another’s values and compatibility. The slogan gives no prescribed list or required count; it emphasizes curiosity and conversation.
Why give someone three dates?
Abrahim says a common dating pitfall is moving on too quickly, sometimes after only a few app messages. The three-date suggestion is meant to keep a brief or awkward first impression from becoming the whole assessment.
Elhady notes that people can be nervous on a first date. A second meeting may feel more relaxed, and a third can give someone a clearer impression of the person. That is a reason to consider another date—not an obligation to continue if you feel uncomfortable or simply do not want to.

What are the three months for?
Abrahim describes three months as a period in which two people can build an emotional connection and think about the timeline for commitment. It is not a deadline by which every couple should become serious, nor a guarantee that more time will resolve a mismatch. The useful question is whether your feelings and expectations are becoming clearer as you spend time together.
Which questions and values matter?
The hosts point to compatibility in core areas such as faith, lifestyle and outlook on life. Their advice is to look beyond surface chemistry and find out whether the way each person wants to live is compatible.

Abrahim also suggests reflecting on the people you admire in your own life. Consider what you value in close friends or family: qualities such as kindness, steadiness or humor may help you describe what matters to you in a partner. The point is not to seek a copy of someone you already know, but to make your own priorities more concrete.
Is this a proven dating method or a Muslim rule?
No. PEOPLE presents the three-part phrase as Abrahim and Elhady’s personal advice. The interview supplies no study, success rate or evidence that following the numbers predicts a lasting relationship. It also does not establish a universal rule for Muslim dating. The hosts are speaking to the experience of matching Muslim American singles, but individuals’ beliefs, boundaries and relationship goals differ.
