ScreenRant reported on November 12, 2025, that Watson, the original NCIS actor behind Mike Franks, was filming a visual aging moment that connects his older Franks with Kyle Schmid’s younger portrayal.
What the set photo reportedly shows
According to ScreenRant’s November 12, 2025 report, Watson appeared on the NCIS: Origins set for a sequence that transitions from Schmid’s version of Franks to Watson’s older version. The report described the image in connection with a crossover between NCIS and its prequel. Its “trippy” characterization refers to the visual transformation, not a technical term for the effect.

Why two actors play Mike Franks
NCIS: Origins is a prequel set in 1991. It follows a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs as he joins the NIS team at Camp Pendleton, where Franks leads the group. Schmid plays Franks in that earlier period; Watson played the character in the original NCIS.

| Actor | Franks portrayal | Series context |
|---|---|---|
| Muse Watson | Older Mike Franks | Original NCIS |
| Kyle Schmid | Younger Mike Franks | NCIS: Origins, set in 1991 |
The reported aging sequence is a visual bridge between those portrayals: it places the younger prequel character and the older version played by Watson in the same transition.
How this fits the prequel’s premise
The prequel’s appeal rests in part on seeing the relationships that shaped Gibbs before the familiar NCIS era. TVLine quoted co-showrunner David J. North describing the premise as “Seeing Gibbs arrive at NIS on Day 1, and seeing how Gibbs became Gibbs…? You will realize there’s so much to explore.” Co-showrunner Gina Lucita Monreal likewise pointed to the Franks-Gibbs relationship, saying, “We’ve not seen that dynamic between ‘probie’ Gibbs and Mike Franks,” as TVLine reported.

Those comments concern the series premise and the younger characters’ dynamic; they are not statements about Watson’s reported set appearance. The photo report supports a particular crossover sequence, not a broader announcement about Watson’s future role.
