To set up multiple cameras for a live stream, send each camera feed to either streaming software such as OBS or a hardware video switcher, choose shots in that system, route one program feed to your encoder, and send it to your streaming platform. The right setup depends on your cameras’ outputs, how many feeds you need at once, and how you want to monitor and operate the production.
Choose where the camera feeds will be switched
The basic signal path is camera feeds → switching and composition → encoder → streaming platform. With software switching, each feed reaches the computer as a video source. With hardware switching, cameras connect to a switcher, which sends a consolidated program feed to the computer or encoder.
Software-first: compose and switch in OBS
OBS uses scenes and sources to build a production layout. Add each camera or capture-card feed as a video capture source, then create scenes for the shots and layouts you need: for example, a full-frame wide shot, a close-up, or picture-in-picture. The OBS overview explains scenes and sources, and its sources guide includes webcams, capture cards, and other video devices as possible video capture sources.
Studio Mode shows the current live scene alongside an editable scene. You can prepare a shot or layout in the editable view before taking it live. This is useful when one operator is composing and switching on the same computer. Confirm that the computer has the required capture interfaces and can handle the number of active feeds and the production settings you plan to use; no universal numeric computer requirement is established here.

Match the equipment to your cameras and production
Before choosing a workflow or buying a switcher or capture device, check the whole signal path rather than just the number of cameras.
| Decision | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Camera output and input connector | Whether each camera outputs HDMI or SDI, and whether the switcher or capture device accepts that signal | The physical connection must be compatible. |
| Number of simultaneous feeds | How many cameras must be connected at once | Switcher input counts differ by model; a software workflow needs enough capture interfaces. |
| Switching method | OBS scenes and controls, or dedicated switcher controls | This determines how the operator prepares and changes shots. |
| Monitoring | Multiview, preview of inputs, or a separate monitor arrangement | The operator needs to identify the next shot. Multiview is not included on every switcher. |
| Program output | USB webcam output, capture-device output, or another encoder path | This establishes how the production reaches streaming software or the encoder. |
| Audio | Which microphone or mixer supplies program audio, how levels are monitored, and whether sync needs checking | Camera cuts should not interrupt or degrade the main audio. |
| Camera consistency | Framing, exposure, focus, and color across angles | Consistent shots make cuts less distracting. |
Set up and rehearse the live production
- Plan positions and shots. Choose a wide or master angle and the close or alternate angles the production needs. Position cameras so they do not block one another, and aim for reasonably consistent composition and lighting.
- Choose the switching point. For OBS, plan how each camera feed will reach the computer, directly or through capture devices. For a hardware workflow, connect cameras to compatible HDMI or SDI inputs, then connect the switcher’s program output to the streaming computer or encoder.
- Build and label scenes or inputs. In OBS, create clearly named scenes and add the required sources. With a switcher, label inputs and arrange monitoring so the operator can identify each feed. The OBS overview describes scene-based layouts; Blackmagic’s ATEM SDI guide describes input switching and multiview on selected models.
- Choose one deliberate audio path. Decide which microphone or mixer provides the program audio, and check that it remains intelligible when the picture changes. The cited setup documentation does not establish a preferred microphone or detailed synchronization procedure, so check your equipment’s audio routing and test it in your own setup.
- Configure the destination encoder. For an encoder-based YouTube stream, enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key in the encoder. YouTube’s encoder streaming help describes connecting audio and video equipment to software or a hardware encoder and using these stream details.
- Rehearse the whole chain before the event. In a private or test session, check every camera input, framing, exposure, focus, audio, transitions, overlays, destination, and monitoring view. A rehearsal can reveal problems at the camera, switching, audio, or encoder stage before they affect a public stream.
Troubleshoot the signal path
When a camera angle or the stream fails, isolate the stage where the signal stops instead of changing several settings at once.

- A camera feed is missing: Confirm the camera is outputting video, the cable and connector match the capture device or switcher input, and the correct input or OBS source is selected. Check the source guide for the relevant OBS video-source types.
- The switcher input count is insufficient: Compare the number of simultaneous cameras with the exact model’s input count. Product-family names alone do not establish a particular model’s capacity; use the manufacturer’s ATEM Mini, ATEM SDI, or ATEM Television Studio guide as appropriate.
- The operator cannot see the next shot: Check whether the exact switcher model includes multiview. If it does not, plan another monitoring arrangement rather than assuming the feature is standard.
- The picture reaches the computer but not YouTube: Check that the encoder is configured for the intended YouTube Live stream and that the server URL and stream key were entered correctly. Consult YouTube’s encoder setup help.
- Audio changes or becomes unclear on cuts: Verify that the intended microphone or mixer is supplying program audio and that its level can be monitored independently of the camera switching. Test the audio during rehearsal.
- The stream works in rehearsal but fails during the event: Recheck the complete camera-to-encoder chain and the destination settings, and rehearse the same switching and audio workflow planned for the event. The cited guides explain individual setup components; they do not establish a single universal cause for failures.
