Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Better live streams usually come from a stronger production chain, not the most expensive camera: frame and light the subject, make speech easy to hear, choose output settings your internet connection and computer can sustain, then rehearse the complete setup. A reliable, clear stream at a modest resolution is more useful than a high-spec stream that stutters or drops.
How to improve your live stream video and audio
Think of a computer-based stream as a chain: camera or screen capture, microphone, any required signal conversion, encoding, and internet connection. A weakness at any link can limit what viewers receive, so improve the part that is actually failing rather than buying gear by default. IBM’s live-streaming overview describes this broader production workflow.
1. Compose the image in your streaming scene
Place the camera so you can look toward its lens, leave intentional space above your head, and remove distracting objects from the frame. A stable mount helps keep the image still; positioning the lens near eye level is a practical composition choice, not a technical requirement.
Check the crop in the actual streaming software preview. In OBS, a scene organizes the output and sources provide elements such as a webcam, screen capture, or capture device. You can position and resize a video source in the scene. If you use picture-in-picture, make sure the camera box does not hide important presentation or game content.

2. Make the subject visible
Look at the face or main subject in the stream preview. A bright window or lamp directly behind someone can leave them silhouetted; try changing the subject’s position or the direction of available light, then check the preview again. Lighting depends on the room and subject, so there is no universally correct position or brightness.
If the room’s existing light is not enough, an LED video light is one possible upgrade. Treat it as optional: first see whether rearranging the subject or using available light solves the problem.

3. Make speech intelligible
Select the intended microphone in OBS, then speak at the distance and volume you expect to use during the stream. Watch the Audio Mixer meters while you talk. If a meter does not move or the wrong input appears selected, check the audio device selection; OBS recommends manually selecting devices when the expected input is missing.
Listen to a short recording or test with headphones or another listening device if available. This can reveal hum, clipping, room echo, or a microphone that is not the one you meant to use. Reduce game or desktop audio if it masks speech. An external USB microphone may help with a specific intelligibility problem, but it is not a prerequisite, and compatibility and room noise still matter.

What equipment do you need to livestream?
Start with the camera, microphone, computer or streaming device, software, and connection you already have. Add a separate accessory only when it solves a noticeable problem in your actual setup. OBS’s Quick Start Guide explains how to add a webcam as a Video Capture Source and set up audio.
| Option | When it may help | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in camera or separate webcam | A separate webcam can be useful if the built-in image, framing, or placement does not work for the room and scene. | Compare the image in the intended room, ease of positioning, connection support, and compatibility with the streaming software. |
| Built-in microphone or USB microphone | An external microphone may help if speech is hard to understand with the existing input. | Listen in the actual room; check background noise, connection simplicity, and compatibility with the streaming device. |
| Available room light or LED video light | A light may help when the existing setup does not illuminate the subject adequately. | Reposition the subject and check the stream preview before buying anything. |
| Webcam or HDMI capture device | A capture card is relevant for a compatible external camera or HDMI source, not for every webcam setup. | Verify the camera’s output, computer connection, and software compatibility. Confirm that the camera can provide the output you need. |
A higher price or specification does not guarantee a better result. Compare equipment and settings in the workflow you will actually use, including the room, streaming device, target platform, and connection.

How to choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate
Use the current guidance for your streaming platform, then choose settings your available upload bandwidth and computer can sustain. OBS exposes output resolution, frame rate, and video bitrate; its streaming overview explains that bitrate depends on upload speed and platform limits and notes that 60 fps can put more load on a system than 30 fps. YouTube likewise advises choosing a quality that gives a reliable stream on the available internet connection in its live encoder settings.
- Resolution: Choose a target that fits your platform’s guidance and your setup’s capacity. Do not assume 4K is inherently better for viewers if the stream cannot remain stable.
- Frame rate: Higher frame rates can demand more from the computer. Consider the motion in your content and test whether the full setup stays smooth.
- Video bitrate: Match it to platform guidance and the upload bandwidth available to the stream. Leave enough headroom for a reliable connection instead of setting it at the maximum your connection might briefly reach.
- Connection protocol: For YouTube Live, YouTube recommends RTMPS. This is a platform-specific connection recommendation, not a camera setting or a universal requirement for every streaming platform.
There is no single bitrate or resolution that suits every service, connection, computer, and type of content. Check the platform’s current limits and guidance before a broadcast rather than relying on a setting copied from an older guide.

How to set up a webcam and microphone in OBS
- Open OBS and create or select a scene. Add only the sources you need for the stream, such as a camera and a presentation or game capture.
- Add the camera source. In the scene’s Sources area, add a Video Capture Source and select the intended webcam or capture device. Position and resize it, then inspect the crop in the preview.
- Select and check the microphone. Choose the intended audio input and speak while watching the Audio Mixer meters. If the expected meter does not move, confirm the selected device and check that the input is connected and available to the computer.
- Set output settings for the platform and setup. Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate using current platform guidance, upload capacity, and computer performance as constraints. For YouTube, use its current encoder guidance and RTMPS recommendation.
- Inspect the full scene. Check framing, overlays, screen content, microphone activity, and the balance between speech and other audio.
- Record or run a private test. Rehearse the complete scene and audio before the first public stream. OBS’s official Quick Start Guide, dated 2021-08-25, says it “strongly encourage[s] running a test for a few minutes” to catch issues before streaming or recording.
Rehearse with a repeatable preflight checklist
Use the same checks each time so a last-minute source or configuration problem is easier to catch:
- Camera: intended device selected, stable image, useful framing, subject visible.
- Audio: intended microphone selected, mixer meter responds, speech is understandable in playback, other audio does not drown it out.
- Scene: correct sources visible, overlays do not cover important content, no unintended windows or screens are shown.
- Output: resolution, frame rate, and bitrate suit the platform and the connection and computer available.
- Connection and destination: the correct streaming destination and stream setup are selected; for YouTube, use the platform’s current guidance.
- Test: make a short recording or private test and review the result before going public.
Troubleshooting common stream problems
| What you notice | What to check | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| The camera is missing or the wrong image appears. | Check the selected Video Capture Source and the scene’s source visibility. | Select the intended camera, make sure the source is visible, and inspect the actual scene preview. |
| The microphone meter does not move. | Check which input device OBS selected and whether the expected microphone is connected and available. | Manually select the intended audio device, then speak and confirm meter activity. |
| Speech is difficult to hear. | Listen to a recording for background noise, echo, clipping, or competing game and desktop audio. | Adjust the setup based on what the playback reveals; reduce other audio if it masks speech. Do not rely on an arbitrary universal meter target. |
| The stream stutters or drops frames. | Consider whether the chosen bitrate exceeds reliable upload capacity or the resolution and frame rate overtax the computer. | Use a more conservative configuration based on platform guidance, then test the full setup again. |
| Important content is hidden in a camera overlay. | Check source size and placement in the scene preview. | Resize or reposition the camera source so the presentation or game information remains visible. |
| The first public broadcast exposes a setup mistake. | Check whether the camera, audio, scene, destination, and connection were rehearsed together. | Record or run a private test of the complete scene before the next broadcast. |
